Importing Footage

Hi Guys,

A quick question regarding the quickest way to import footage. At present we record a lot of weddings, using two 5D mk3's plus a C100. We normally get through 8 64Gb cards for the 5D's and a 64Gb card for the C100. I back up all the footage to a separate hard drive then import the footage into FCPX direct from the hard drive. (I used to import directly from the cards to FCPX but would get lots of errors, something to do with FCPX not liking very large files).

The problem I am having is the length of time the import process takes. We have been hired to shoot a 3 day wedding in the South of France and we are required to produce a next day highlights film. (Using a New MacBook Pro Retina and two 1Gb G Raid mini's. USB 3.0). I figure if we finish recording 11:00pm and start the import I am not going to have much time do do the actual edit. I am using a Lexar USB 3.0 dual card reader to import the footage.

If anyone has any idea how to speed up the actual import process so I can get to doing the actual edit more quickly it would be most appreciated.

Thanks for any help or advice!

Have you looked at the Atomos Ninja 2? Record directly to a hard drive in ProRes. You can edit straight off the drive or copy it over to your computer. I can get about 12 hours of footage on a $70 750GB hard drive.

Hi Legion,

Yes I have a Ninja 2 but it has failed on 3 consecutive shoots. (One replacement after the next!). Then at a wedding yesterday it was dropped and is now needing repair. Not having much luck with it. We will not have the opportunity to use it in France which adds to my importing woes. (Takes ages to import the avchd file).

Thanks for the advice though!
