Importing Footage on an HMC 40

So I import all of my footage by putting my 32gb Transcend Class 10 card into my Kodak card reader. I try to drag all of my videos of the card onto my desktop and they are all .mts files. Is there a way for my videos to .mp4 or something recognized by quicktime?

because I want to be able to store my files on my desktop for use later in other projects so how do I make the .mts files mp4s?

It will re-wrap them into an MP4, but its a pain to edit with, especially in FCP 7, which is what I edit in. You should definitely think about Log & Transfer or transcoding to a different codec (a la DVCProHD).

I use Any Video Converter with the xvid coded and convert then to .avi files.

Copy the entire card to a folder, call it RAW. Log and Transfer from that folder as needed. Just be careful not to mess up the directory structure, copy the entire contents of the card to a folder.

Here is the best solution I have found for "converting" raw HMC files into Quicktime. Really you want to "re-wrap" the files, not actually convert them.
