Important HVX Audio Input Question

Need to input some audio via a standard Red/White cord into the Red/White audio inputs on the side of the HVX. This worked fine when I did it with my XL2 (before I sold it) but I'm having a hard time getting any levels to show up by way of Red/White on the HVX. I've played around with the settings after doing a general attempt by putting the HVX in VCR mode and hitting record, which did not work. On the XL2, I had to be in camera mode to do this and it was a matter of switching the audio input buttons. This could not be done in VCR mode on the XL2, only in camera mode. Does not seem to be the case with the HVX - I've switched the settings just about every way I know possible in BOTH modes and still nothing. I thought that perhaps I needed to use the Audio Dub mode - but can't seem to get audio to input that way, either. You'd think that having the HVX in camera mode...all you would have to do is switch the Audio Inputs beneath the flip-out LCD - doesn't seem to be the case. The camera acknowledges the XLR inputs just fine. Any suggestions would be greatly helpful. For composing music, this was a very handy way of doing things directly to MiniDV with the XL2.
 
The only way the RCA inputs work for audio input is in VCR mode. Also you have to give it a video signal. If there's no video signal present, it won't record anything.
 
This is very helpful! But how do I give it a video signal in VCR mode and record audio at the same time? and in VCR mode, what should my AV IN/OUT settings be? Also, I assume the 2 inputs on the front of the camera to bring the RCA audio in should be set to Line as opposed to Mic?
 
Line/mic doesn't matter, RCA inputs are always line.

Just give it a video signal. Doesn't matter what. Plug in a composite feed from a VCR or anything.
 
Man, I feel stupid. Right before I checked your response, I figured it out for myself - I was just thrown off by the XL2 - but yes, I gave it a video feed and it works fine. Thank you so much for getting me back to common sense.
