Importance of working MJPEG for OSS workflow

Hi guys,

as GH1 user, I am following the wonderful development of the firmware hack since it was made public. I noticed, that much of the efforts of testing go into getting the most (quality-wise) out of the camera, but we hopefully will also find balanced settings that works in "real life" scenarios (documentary filmmaking, half hour interview with cheap sd card, 25p, still good quality...) for MJPEG.

The reason I want to stress this is, that mjpeg FINALLY makes it possible, to have an "open source" workflow without transcoding (mjpeg seems to be much more oss friendly than avchd). I know that in the video world, free and open source software still is an underdog, but we will get there.

So keep up the good work and dont forget us FLOSS folks!

Right now it seems that MJPEG is severly handicapped by the playback issue. You can get really nice MJPEG footage, but it takes only a minor tweak that puts MJPEG bitrates over about 38MBs to make playback fail. With most serious work, you really want or even need the ability to review. And that seems unlikely right now.

I think your best solution is an open source program that will convert AVCHD to an open source friendly intraframe CODEC.

Have you looked here?

My workflow now is to transcode with ffmpeg, but I prefer mjpeg. And to be honest, the reviewing was an issue when I worked with DV tapes, but with the SD cards, there is no capturing anymore, and the copying of files to my laptop for reviewing is done very quickly.
