Import T2I footage in FCP7

Now after reading all these posts and seeing all the transcoding steps etc........ am I doing something wrong? Here is my work flow.

1. Take SDHC card from T2I and insert into Sandisk card reader.
2. Drop folder into project file on the local HD.
3. Open FCP 7
4. choose file IMPORT from main menu.
5. Drag .MOV file to timeline and play.

There is no transcoding needed and plays/edits and burns flawlessly.

Is this process like this only in FCP 7? Cause it seems that everyone else has this massive workflow involving compressor or 3rd party software. Is anyone else using this method?

I'm interested to know how you qualify "plays/edits and burns flawlessly."

What are your project/sequence settings? How many effects, filters, layers, and transitions are you adding? The files straight out of the T2i are h.264, which is a delivery format and not an editing format. The reason everyone else has a slightly more complicated workflow is that they're converting the footage to an editing format such as ProRes.

Yeah what system are you on and what happens when you add filters and transitions? H.264 will certainly load and edit on an FCP 7 timeline however it's best converted to ProRes. You also get less concatenation with each export (i.e. compressing an already heavily compressed signal, resulting in lower image quality).

Haven't added any effects yet, just imported and for this project its a straight cuts only project. I can see where the addition of effects and grading would start to choke the system however.

Is it best to download the EOS FCP patch and edit the P-list as per Phillip Blooms blog post? Is this how you guys are able to log and transfer?

That's presently the only way with T2i until Canon updates the plugin. Otherwise you can do it through Compressor. Footage looks the same- it's just a question of how important things like timecode and camera metadata are to you.

It'll work for a little while, but after the project starts getting bigger, it'll start to bog down. Convert to ProRes. You need to hack the Canon EOS L&T plugin (sadly), but it works great. THis is how I do it. Using Bloom's hack.
