Import a portion of a digital file?

I'm fairly new to my MC 5.5 system... But I've read 3 books and am getting really comfortable...
One thing I can't figure out:

So it possible to import only a portion of a digital video file?
Like 10 minutes from an hour long clip?
Specifically .mts AVCHD files from a panasonic HMC-150, with timecode available.

In short answer No. You could transcode the footage using into DNxHD and then access through AMA. That is really just trading import time to transcode time. Idealy when avid supports AVCHD via AMA, which they are working on. (told to me by an Avid tech at NAB) you would be able to AMA the full hour clip in just a few seconds. Until then. Import or Transcode.
 
Thanks, man. That's what I thought, but I wanted to make sure before continuing to waste time transcoding entire clips. I should probably just break the project up while shooting by stopping the camera for a sec here and there.

AVCHD via AMA is going to rock if they can get it worked out. Will make my life a lot easier. Maybe in 6.0.
