iMovie codecs

I know that sounds crazy, but, a brand new community television asked me to supervise a group of student and their teacher to make a broadcast tv show... with the latest iMovie... and a Panasonic P2 camera (don't ask me wich one exactly these guys don't know...) So I was wandering wich codec in-cam has to be set to perform great in iMovie. (DVCPRO, DVCPRO50, AVC-Intra?)

If you want more info about that community tv, I can start a new thread else where.

Thanks for answering!

It's not a crazy subject, it's just that Apple leaves little/no information about this is the manual or other documentation.

The last I recall, it pulled all SD material in as DV, and all HD material as AIC. I don't know what all it's able to read before import, but you can always use MPEG StreamClip to convert to AIC after you shoot in another flavor of HD.

Just tried it out with a P2 archive I had. No luck ingesting straight into the program. Additionally, I don't think iMovie comes with the right codecs to play any of those DVCPRO or AVC-Intra files. Even if you converted the videos to .mov, the system would still need the "pro" codecs included in FCP, etc, in order to play them out. I think it's going to be AIC or nothing in this case. Also, StreamClip doesn't open the MXF files from the copied card directly, you might need another option...

iMovie will work best with DV, HDV, AIC, and MPEG-4. Convert P2 to these formats or use a higher end NLE.
