Images in FCP

TIFF, PNG, JPEG, etc. TIFF and PNG if you want to have transparency. JPEG is good if you keep the compression high to avoid artifacts. If you are starting with JPEG files, you are better off sticking with that and not apply any more conversions.

ColorSpace set to sRGB (or converted to it) works best (without getting to much into it).

There's a table in the manual that tells you more, including which dimensions work best.

What about if starting from a RAW image?

Convert to any of those formats from the RAW image.

I would stick with pict or png however.

Remember, dpi means nothing in video.

It is pixel grid size.

Do whatever adjustments you need to make in your raw converter, then export to TIFF, PNG or JPEG. Just don't forget to change the color space to sRGB.
