Image Stablilization

Mercalli V2 seems like an excellent solution from what i can see on vimeo.
one thing a don't get:
how does it fix only those tiny 'hand-made' shivers during a shot, while keeping any natural good small intuitive camera adjustment and movements ?

With the Pro version you can dial in independant adjustments to smooth zoom, panning, rolling shutter correction etc. Even uneven pans are smoothed out. If you preset only very small numbers it will just remove the hand jitter that is in most GH footage and everything else is relatively untouched. There is a huge difference between V1 and V2 of Mercalli, V2 stabilizes with much less crop effect. As i said above, as a side effect, it can add motion blur to stroby video shot at high shutter.

I'm actually modifying a 3 axis gyro/servo stabilizer mast mount to use on a monopod with manual gain adjustments on each axis, that will further stabilize the recorded footage so i need not rely on post manipulation as much.

There goes my job as a Human Gimbal!!!

Ha ha ha. I'd really look cool walking around with that :) I thought a steadicam was bad enough.
Yeah i was only joking about the cable dangling thing Ralph ....haha But hey, ENG operators use it all the time.

great ! that really eases my mind towards my handhelds, cause i really like the rough handheld look, but the tiny hand jitter can drive me mad (can save those precious shots with the FD lenses)

Just a warning though, it should only be used as a "fix" otherwise you tend to get lazy with your shooting knowing that Mercalli can save you.
Too late for me though, i'm so addicted i run my stills through Mercalli as well....hehe ....joking.

no no no, i ain't lazy... it's just that i started shooting a feature and i know there gonna be be some problematic shots here and there. just wanted to know i'm on the safe side,
without sacrificing too much resolution to fix those shots in the end.

Handheld shot with an OIS-stabilized Panasonic 14-50mm f2.8-3.5 auto-focus zoom on a G2. This lens has a bad reputation for the way it breathes while focusing, but its OIS is rock-steady:

lpowell, as you know i have the 45 - 200, how would you rate this against the 14 - 50 OIS? (Which i don't have)

The 45 - 200 is a fairly gentle OIS so i find it doesn't jump or skip, actually it's comparable in OIS to my HMC 152. Some lenses over compensate and can't be used on a tripod. The 45 - 200 i find is fine on a tripod with OIS on.

Yes, I'd agree, there's a big difference between the subtle OIS of the Lumix 45-200mm and the thick stability of the 14-50mm Leicasonic. Of course, if I mounted the 14-50mm on a tripod, I'd simply (be forced to) turn off the OIS switch.

@ lpowell, So would you also class the Pana 14 - 45mm as subtle OIS as well????? (i think you have this lens) I'm still considering getting it as a match for the 45- 200 and for use on the Gymbal head pictured above to counter the faster jitter that the servos are too slow to react to.

i have to use vintage lenses, the new sharp lenses look is something i cannot use for a feature...

The IS in this video is a million times better than my GH1 with the 14-45. Are you sure it is the lens, not the body/lens combo? If it is the lens, I will buy this lens in a heartbeat and sell my 14-45.
