Image Stabilizer

Anyone ever try using the image stabilizer button while shooting 24p? I haven't experimented with it at all and was curious if it posed any problems.

Re: Image Stabilizer

Frame setting doesnt matter as much as you would think it would.. just dont use it when your on a tripod.

Re: Image Stabilizer

Jarred,

Why wouldn't you use it when on a tripod? Just wondering if there is a technical reason or just a rule of thumb?

Thanks,
Chris

Re: Image Stabilizer

because if you use it on a tripod and do a pan/tilt, the gyros can do some nasty things to the move. It only happens at a certain speed combination, but still can ruin the shot.

Re: Image Stabilizer

The Panasonic OIS does this weird side-stepping thing when panning - esp. on a tripod. Definitely don't use it unless you're shooting handheld and are fairly shakey.

Re: Image Stabilizer

I've used it doing handheld shots that I want to be steady but for one reason or another couldn't use a tripod. It makes a dramatic difference to the stability. I really like it. Better than on my old Sony DSR-250. I never use it on a tripod but sometimes I'll have it on when I use my glidecam.

Because the tripod is an image stabilizer by itself. So if you use the OIS, you'll have one stabilizer fighting the other. As you start panning the camera on the tripod, the OIS will see the motion and try to "correct" it, so as you're panning the image won't actually move in the camera... until you exceed the OIS's correction limit, at which point the shot will "jerk" sideways.

The tripod is all the stabilizer you need. The OIS just gets in the way when you're tripod-mounted.

Re: Image Stabilizer

Hmm, never thought of it that way :-/
Thats one for the memory banks I have never bothered switching it off, I've never had any problems but thats not to say that I won't so I will remember that.
BTW I have found that if I shoot in 50i (PAL) and have AF on the OIS causes the AF to hunt and take it's time getting in focus. Anyone else seen this?
