FS7: Image Stabilisation - your thoughts

How does the FS100/700 kit lens (I think it was a 18-200) sit on an FS7?
didnt that have IS?

I have the 18-200 from the 700, I kept it when I sold the 700. And I am glad I did. It works great as a R&G lens on the FS7 and it has 2 versions of IS the active is the best I have ever seen in a video lens or still lens for that matter.

I use it quite a bit on quick HD shoots. It falls apart in 4K. And I don't mind it being on the slow side, easier to hit focus, I often shoot at f8 on that lens. It is also very light and compact. I have even used it on the A7s in APS-C mode, works perfectly on that tiny cam as well.

What falls apart in 4K? The resolution of the lens or the IS?
Do you have the Power zoom version or the older one? Probably the same image quality.

How does it soften things?
Most lens image stabilisation systems use a floating lens element or series of lens elements that move in an opposite direction to the camera movement. Inevitably, those moving elements have an impact on sharpness. It can also lead to ghosting on highlights. Use with caution and on the appropriate shot and it's fine.

The lens is not as sharp as a really good piece of glass, so the 4K resolution starts to show uneven focus edge to edge etc. The IS is fine, in my experience I have not noticed IS lowering sharpness, maybe if you are really rough with the camera it does. IS in post always degrades the image somewhat in my experience, very much if you have very unstable video.

Even with IS be a s smooth as you can.

I have the original silver non power zoom version of the 700 kit lens. As far as I know the optics are the same in the black power zoom version.

Thanks Olof
Does anyone know how the Sony PZ 18-105 fares at 1080 and 4k?

It gets slagged off by one or two, but I'm using it as my main workhorse lens and am getting great results with it at 1080. Not sure about 4K. I've done one interview at 4K, quick and dirty corporate, and it looked fine, but I haven't done enough to get a gut feeling yet.

If you want a flexible zoom that takes you over 100mm on the tele, with an S35-friendly wide end and IS (keeping things on thread!), it's your only choice at the mo.

Ben.

It's the least exciting and the most usefull lens I have.

Nicely put.

If you've used the Canon 24-105, I'd say it 's a similar proposition, just with added wide-ness :-)

One advantage it has is internal zooming - so it's matte box friendly, without having to use donuts etc.

Also, it seems to be a true f4 throughout the range, without any fall-off when extended (unlike the Canon.)

Re sony 18-105 , do you guys use it with or without correction ?
I know that with correction it hobbles your LUTs ( all on or all off) and won't work in UHF or HFR right ?
If Uncorrected , does the distortion bother you?

In terms of IS, I think the 18-105 is looking like a go-er for me based upon your opinions. It's cheap and it covers a nice range of lengths.
If ever an adapter comes out for other lenses, then I'd be all over it

i usually keep correction on as I use this lens for "eng" type shoots in custom mode. If I need to disable correction for a couple of shots I will do so if I don't have a lot of straight lines in my shot where the distortion will be noticeable. When in doubt I will switch to one of my primes ( 12mm, 35mm, 50mm, 135mm).

Candidly, I couldn't see any difference during a brief test a couple of months back.

I went with correction on, after reading vociferous opinions about awful pin cushion distortion.

However, it's entirely possible that I'm guilty of just going along with "group think."

I've been shooting with SLog3 in the EVF, so I haven't yet used an MLUT. Just got into a groove and keep meaning to try an MLUT.

Anyone got their own A/B evidence of distortion correction on the 18-105, when shooting video?

Distortion is visible on the telephoto end when looking at a straight line and only if it is prominently in focus in the shot. Clients with lower standards (news) will never notice it. Then again for these clients you rarely shoot anything other than 1080 in standard5. Avoiding cine EI and working in custom mode is surely a way which is why my next purchase will be a Gratical or the new sidefinder from smallhd so I can use luts in the viewfinder in custom mode.

I think both IS and stabilisation in post is usually a pretty evident aesthetic, so I only use it when its needed. For DSLR its usually good though.

When I had it for testing I sure saw a lot on wide angle also . Doorways were rounded . It is true I didn't notice it till I was looking for it , but then it was obvious . I could see how you could get away with it . For me there were just too many negatives - distortion , fly by wire focus , limitations for using distortion comp ...
Great range though and even nice to have a little power zoom .

The fly by wire is the most annoying thing, the other issues I could live with. Every time I want to kick it to the curb I have a shoot that really would have been annoying If I had to constantly change lenses and I realize as much as I hate it I can't really live without it. I am waiting for the next firmware upgrade to see if they give us center crop and if it is quick to implement then maybe a gl optics 18-35 cine rehouse could be a good general use lens covering effectively 18-70mm, or a red RPZ 17-50mm giving you 17-100 with center crop. Until then unfortunately the 18-105 will be ireplaceable for me. If sony managed somehow to bring out a lens in that range with the 28-135 mechanics people will buy them like crazy but I wouldn't count on sony to make it happen.

I just stuck with the Canon 24-105 and especially the Tamron 24-70 which I really like a lot. Not the same range but sharp, fast and has IS. Not quite par focal but not terrible. I hated the fly by wire on 18-105, not as bad on the 18-200 nor the 28-135.
