FS7: Image stabilisation and autofocus lenses

Did a lot of research on the Internet, lots of opinions though, but few facts.

I own the 18-105 Sony lens. I like it. Autofocus is nice and I don't know if IS works well because I always use a tripod.

Now for the third party lenses, does AF and IS work (esp. on long lenses). Or is IS photography territory only?
I only have old MF primes now. Had Nikkor 80-200 2.8 AF but could not use the AF because I didn't have the converter.

I other words, is investing in an electronic converter worth the money? (Metabones, photodiox) Nikon to E-mount or Canon to E-mount

Af is handy. But is IS handy or not, or am I cursing in the church?

AFAIK no adapters will power Nikon IS and that's a shame. However it works fine with Canon glass since those adapters power the lens. Also fine with 3rd party Canon mount glass like Tamron, Sigma etc. Metabones for sure works.

Can report that IS works via Metabones speedbooster with Canon (28-300), and WELL - I can shoot comfortably from the shoulder at over 200mm. IS is also functioning well on my Tamron (24-70), which is the only 24-70 F2.8 with IS when I last checked. As a side note, you're switching OFF your IS when on sticks, right? It can introduce a strange drift to the footage, as the internal gyros get confused by the lack of movement. You are probably already aware of this fact, just checking! :-)

AFAIK, AF is all but unusable with the FS-7 on non-Sony lenses.

Cheers,

jason

Yes, so far usable auto focus AND image stabilisation is Sony e-mount lenses only. Which is why I was so bummed they didn't include IS on the new 24-70 FE lens.

As for the Tamron - I was first very excited about it - then found out it focuses the "wrong" (nikon) way. Being used to the other way makes this lens no-go for me at least.

We've done the rounds on this forum a few times about IS. I'm a big fan of IS for video - but I probably shake a lot more than the young bucks with their primes.

I'd love to replace my 18-105, but the trouble is, it's so damn good on the FS7 as s compromise go-to lens - bit like the Canon 24-105. Canon users often hate it, or are indifferent to it, but can't live without it.

Hmmmmmm... I used to think that way (prior to buying the Tamron 24-70), and it does occasionally bother me (it's the only 'reverse' focus lens I use amongst an otherwise Canon L-series inventory).

BUT - I'm surprised how much muscle memory can compensate given that it's likely to be one's main go-to lens. Using a follow focus is a breeze, but that's not always possible. Each to their own, obviously, and if I doesn't work for you then that's that. I guess all I'm saying is "don't knock it 'till you try it" ... if I hadn't tried it, I'd still be stuck trying to shoot walk n talks at without IS, and that equates to a pretty boring 24-35mm range, or jangle-vision at 40mm+...

Really can't understand what it is about 24-70s that means Tamron are the only people who've cracked an IS version. Or why the hell they haven't released it in both directions...

What Jason said. Its worth the hassle of the opposite direction IMHO, but its an individual choice. Easier if you use a follow focus especially one that's reversible .

I wonder why a lot of people are so keen on third party lenses? Sony products are not toxic! I ordered the FS7 without lens as I had the 18-105 for a test at the FS700 and I was very disappointed about the horrible distortion without lens correction. Instead I bought the Sony 16-70z and I am pretty happy with it for docs, run&gun and situations when it's not possible to change lenses. I heard that some people complained about softness or missing sharpness which I cannot confirm. Don't expect miracles of AF. OSS works well, it's a visible difference compared to the contax 28-85

I have the 1670 too and it's a useful lens much maligned due to the more horrible aspects of Sony's other lenses i.e. the squelchy focus which the 1670 doesn't have BTW but people expect it to... Sony should've made this lens the kit lens for the FS5 but they probably had a lot of unsold garbage 18105s they had to clear from their inventory...

The 1670 is difficult to find secondhand and is ridiculously expensive for what it is when purchased new and a secondhand nikkor/canon + SBU offers better value IMHO.

the 1670 is way more handy than a Canon/Nikon/SBU and it fits perfect also for the a6000. I use it also with the a6000 under a drone

IMHO the 2885 AIS + SBU is the best combination money can buy. The optics and the real manual focus of the 2885 piss on the 1670 from a great height.
