Image Size

I don't know...this seems technical-ish.

What size are the frames? Importing the DV into whatever and it's the 720x480 setting.

But 16:9 would be 720x405.

But if I export from the timeline as still images, it's 872x480.

Is this the whole square pixel/non-square pixel thing?

If I'm creating stills in a paint program, what size should they be so they don't get distorted when put in with the video? The 872x480?

Bad enough I have to set the clock back tonight, I don't need this confusion, too. ;)

(Ignore this, if it's covered in Barry's book...)

Re: Image Size

It's even more complicated than that. Forgive me if I'm incoherent; I'm drunk.

Basically, letterbox mode is 720X372 with black edges so that the entire frame is 720X480. These pixels are rectangular, though, so it's effectively the equivalent of 720X419 pixels in terms of square pixels (720X540 including border). Squeeze mode is 720X480, but it's rectangular in the OPPOSITE direction, so in square pixels, it would be 852X480 if stretched horizontally.

Re: Image Size

All DV frames are 720x480, regardless of whether they're 4:3 or 16:9 (unless you're in PAL territory, in which case all DV frames are 720x576).

I forgot to go into square pixels/non-square pixels in the book... sorry, that should have been a chapter. Maybe in the 2nd edition.

Anyway, all frames are 720x480. The difference in shape comes from the pixel aspect ratio. The pixel dimensions do not change, but the pixel aspect ratio gets changed, which is then reflected in the overall shape of the frame.
