FS7: image sample with problems

It's not so bad, what issues are you having? What NLE are you using. Here's what I did in 30 seconds in premier.

The first one I did was applying a custom curve and adding saturation, the second is using Lumetri and the LC709TypeA LUT.

IMO the LUT whops your manual skills because it is tuned to do all the right things to 'untangle' the negative - sat and a lum curve are a sledg-hammer in comparison. Of course they can get you there but not simply.

Totally agree Sam. I actually did a LUT first which looked terrible, so did the manual one. Then I noticed I added the wrong LUT! Numpty...

Sam your grade looks the closest but her coat is more grey than black. The violet tone must have been my fault somehow or the camera just got it wrong. I did use a Lastolite to white balance but given the blueish daylight, warm room light and my two LED panels colour were all over the place.

Care to put some grey in her coat and send me a LUT?

I think the FS7 handles mixed light surprisingly well. In fact, I had a very similar set up to yours on a quick turnaround shot a few weeks ago. Lots of daylight, overhead halogen that couldn't be switched off, one LED panel, one 300 watt Arri and a blonde woman of a certain age. I considered shooting it in custom mode, but at that stage I hadn't tested that mode much, so decided to shoot in CineEI mode, but with the LC709TypeA LUT baked-in so the client didn't have to tweak too much. Next time, I'd probably use custom mode with Hypergamma7 - at least then I can monitor accurately and benefit from custom WB.

This was how that one turned out, not an award winner, but for a quick vox pop it's passable:

Normally I block it or move the set-up to a better location. In this instance, there were a whole load of downlights (hate the things) and not enough time or black wrap. I could have put a reflector overhead but was already using it camera left to block reflection from a yellow wall. It's always a series of compromises I guess.

I made a grade like this but I'm still not happy with the result.

During these last days I've done some tests and to me at least I get the best image from the FS7 by using Cine EI.

Looks much better Osslund. Maybe a tad more saturation and lose a touch of yellow, but it's perfectly acceptable for something lit by LED (I've never been happy with anything I've shot with LED). Certainly her suit looks way better now.

I agree about CineEI - that's what I shoot in all the time as long as I'm not handing it over to an client who who wants a baked-in look.

I hear you about LED panels. For this job I used a couple of cheap 312 LEDs because I had to travel light and couldn't bring anything else. In retrospect I should have used Cine EI, a LUT and put my LEDs cooler.

How did you shoot/expose/set the camera?

Leds are not going to help - maybe consider my little Dled4.1 - I think the CRI is good -certainly better than $100 crappy panels and certainly more portable than redheads

But I still rate redheads when 'on grid' often with CTB.

I used Custom mode iso2000, white balance from white card, exposure as far as I could see at the waveform, UHD and I used a Canon 85/1.2 set to F2.2 with the speedbooster ultra.

This is what I try to match:
