Image quality

Ok, I will try to explain my problem. When I shoot someone who is close to the cam I can get I very good image but when I shoot someone who is far away the image quality drops down, you can see some shaking lines ( very tiny ones ) just as you have when the compression quality is not so good. I am not able to show you the footage right now, but maybe someone will figure it out without it. I really need this help. thanks

I was just about to post the same question... I have a 100a w/ about 100 hours on the head. We had the dreaded red circle X... and cleaned the head w/ the Panny tape. Yet in some footage recorded before and now after the 10 second cleaning... we have serious moire' type patterns on horizontal lines in the background. As the original poster said - looks like bad compression. Is this indicative of a dirty head (still)?

I have read the whole head cleaning thread... and will get some swabs & appropriate al-kee-hol. I just don't know what I can find up here (Maine) and I have a full day of shooting scheduled for Tuesday.

Thoughts & insights appreciated....

What mode were you shooting in? And were the shaking lines on a subject with a pattern or strong vertical or horizontal lines?

Was the vertical detail setting on "thin"? And if so try changing it to "thick" to see if you still get the problem.

There's more info on the board about "thick" vs. "thin" vertical detail setting.

(note: the problem I am describing is not a dirty head problem but an artifact of dv).

I believe it is not a head problem for my dvx100a is still new. I will try the "thick" setting tomorrow and see what happens. Thanks a lot

I see some issues with the edges of the nose and the penguin custume against the background. It looks like a problem with DV's sampling. Here's a good article that explains the problems with green and blue screen compositing and also solutions:

Hope this helps.

Thanks Hansk! Well the same problem happens when I am not working with chroma key. I can get rid of the edge problem using Ultra, but the problem for me is not the edge but overall image of the object, parts as the eye get low quality. I will try some scene settings to see if it helps me somehow. Thanks again;

I know I piggy backed onto this thread... please forgive me Fabio!
I just tested my problem... this relates to strong horizontal lines, specifically lines in the siding on a colonial home in the background. When the spacing is large enough it is barely noticable, but still present, but as the spacing gets tighter it exhibits severe moire type problems... reminiscent of the old Newton Rings found on photo prints made with a glass negative carrier.

I tried setting the detail to thick... played with various Vdetail settings... all the results are the same. I was shooting in 30P, butr tesed in 60i and got the same result...

This is very troubling right now... as any strong horizontal line exhibits this.

HELP!

Thanks
