Image problem with Marshall V-R70P-HDA 7" monitor and HPX500

Hi there.

I have an image quality issue with a Marshall V-R70P-HDA 7" monitor fed via component from an HPX500. The image quality on the monitor is terrible in both 1080i and 480i. The picture suffers from what looks like a phase problem with flickering horizontal bars slowly moving up the screen. No matter how I have the camera set up, the picture looks the same. The techs at Marshall say it sounds like a tear in the signal. They're looking into it to see if it's just a one-off problem or something widespread.

Now when I plug in the same monitor to an HVX200 with the AV-out set to either 720P, 1080i, or 480i, the picture is excellent. Good enough to pull focus with. Interestingly the HPX500 component video out menu does not have a setting for 720P. All I see are auto, 1080i, and 480i.

Just to clarify: There is no problem with the recorded image, just what is seen on the monitor.

Has anyone used this model Marshall on the HPX500? If so, how does the picture look?, and how have you set-up the camera?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Best,
Simon

I haven't use the Marshall with the HPX500, but I had one thought: did you buy a Marshall with the Zebtec modification that is specifically for using the monitor with the HVX200? I don't know the technical details of the mod, but I know it was to improve image quality with the HVX. Just a guess.

You're right BTT, I use the same monitor on my HPX500, I have the rolling bars as well but my picture quality is good though. I connected my HVX200 to it and the rolling bars dissapears.
Maybe something for Jan C.

Hi Guys,

Jan says it sounds like a grounding problem, and I have the same feeling. At least I know it's not my particular camera, since Dolph has the same issue. I'm still waiting to hear back from the Marshall tech.

Jan helped clear up one of my questions: The OUTPUT Sel setting when set to AUTO will output whatever the camera is set to, so if the camera is recording 720P and the OUTPUT Sel is on AUTO then the monitor will be fed 720P.

Kevin: I didn't know about this Zebtec mod. I bought the monitor as stock without any known mods for the HVX, but I'll follow up on that with Marshall.

Cheers,
Simon.

Yeah, the OUTPUT SEL is a cross/downconverter choice.

AUTO means if you're shooting 1080, it outputs 1080. If you're shooting 720, it outputs 720. If you're shooting 480, it outputs 480.

Choosing 1080 means that if you're shooting 720p, it will cross-convert to 1080i. If you're shooting 1080, it outputs 1080. If you're shooting 480, it'll output 480 (no upconversion possible).

Choosing 480 means that regardless of what mode you're shooting, it'll output 480.

Mine does the same...

How are you powering your monitor? I have it with a v-mount style plate and I also bought a d-tap to power the mashall off of my anton bauer setup. When I put d-tap it looks like crap, constant rolling picture etc... when I power it with the v-mount battery it looks perfect. Is this a grounding issue? Please help because I need this rectified fast.

Thanks...

same story here. rolling bars and softer image than i got with my hvx. mine is stock with the original v-mount plate. i have tried powering it on it's own battery, from the power tap on the batt plate on the hpx, and from the wall. same every way. i was thinking the hd-sdi version of the monitor may fix this. any ideas?

Im running a pana monitor via the 12v out on my cam. In either SDI or component Im not seeing any rolling bars at all. So it must be something related to the marshall set up?

thanks noel. at least that rules out the component jack being crappy.

anyone have experience with the hd-sdi version of the marshall?

Now you have brought this post up again, I remember seeing this with another crew I worked for who also used the Marshall monitor, that doesnt help you of course, but it helps verify its something between the HPX and Marshall monitors and not others.

i will add this to the mix. when i go component out of the 500 to a different monitor or a tv, no interference. if i daisy chain from the 500 to the marshall then to another monitor, i get the interference on both monitors. so it seems the trouble is with the marshall and it passes the problem along....

Marshall makes junk. I've had issues even getting the damn thing to trigger on.

I used a glidecam monitor on my 500 it was ok but still sucked.
Glide cam monitors are made by marshall, identical guts.

all B&H monitors and markertek mon's are over priced for what they are.
LCD are not expensive anymore.

I'm waiting for these guys to get there act together checkum out:

http://www.smallhd.com/showcase.html

they say it will sell for around the $500-700 range for a 1280x768 11inch
on cam mount, batt operated, multiple inputs and tough.

not really the issue here. this thread is regarding a problem specific to the hpx500. my marshall looks great with an hvx or any other component source i plug in. hpx500 seems to have a problem with it's component out playing nice with the marshall.
