Image looking jagged and pixelated

I just finshed shooting some standups the other day and was looking at the playback on my computer and the images looked really horrible. All around the subjects head was jagged and as well as images in the background. I had everything zero'd out and I was shooting on F5. I beleive the detail was on thin. I've posted some samples for you to checkout. Look at the rooftops  and the wires circled in orange. Any suggestions??

Re: Image looking jagged and pixelated

Hi,

So is this an extracted frame of the 24P or just any frame in the sequence. Could this be the BC or CD frame?

Step through a 5 frame sequence and give us an AA frame. What does that look like?

Best,

Jan

You have to keep it simple for the new ones.  Speak in laymans terms.  So, what she means is:

AA AB BC CC DD

Which one?   :D

Serious; it doesn't appear to be an interlace issue. Is this possibly a detail / coring issue?

Barry! ?

Re: Image looking jagged and pixelated

I change my stance.

What NLE are you using and are you allowing Pulldown when bringing 24p into the project?

Re: Image looking jagged and pixelated

That just doesn't look right.

I'm gonna take a wild stab -- are you editing on a Mac? Did you use Quicktime to view the footage? Looks like Quicktime set on "low" quality or something.

Re: Image looking jagged and pixelated

I'm on Avid Xpress 4.6 but I'm not shooting advanced 24p. I just watched so of the footage from the cam straight through to the monitor and the jaggedness isn't as bad on the rooftops. Just some strobbing. And No, I'm on a PC. The stills came straight from the avid.

Re: Image looking jagged and pixelated

What are your DETAIL (Coring) settings on the DVX? (I'm stabbing here)

Re: Image looking jagged and pixelated

Are you using the 'Original' or 'A'? If 'A' I was referring to DEATIL CORING (Isn't that based on a -/+ Scale 7 ?)

I really have no idea on this' it does not look right :-/

Re: Image looking jagged and pixelated

Yeah, I have the original. It's got over 400 hours on it. I've had it close to two years now. Must be starting to wear.

Highly doubt it would give an effect like this. I'm pretty sure that it has something to do with your project settings. make sure you are not working in an interlaced timeline. Also, try capturing with a program like scenalyzer http://www.scenealyzer.com
grab a screen grab from that.

I highly doubt that it is the camera. I would almost bet money on it being project settings.

You could also download the demo to vegas and capture a grab from that, see what it looks like then.

Re: Image looking jagged and pixelated

I shall offer my other worldly advice ... muahaha

I am on a mac.. but I think this still might be the root cause..

it looks to me as if the image is only displaying a single field... I know that if you are viewing DV videos in the Quicktime player it is automatically using only 1 field... you have to manually set it to use the "High Quality" setting.. which is basically just combining the fields... hence making it progressive..

the image degradation is not only on the roof tops.. look at the cars and elsewhere.

I don't know if Avid works the same as FCP in this respect, but in FCP you can set the Viewer and Canvas windows to display the video at low, medium or high res...

it looks to me that the Avid is not showing you all the info in the DV file.. if there is a setting to show your work at 'High Quality' then this may help.

But as I said, I am not familiar with how Avid displays DV video.

It just looks as if it is only 1 field of the video being used.

here is a comparison for you:

One field:
onefield.jpg

High Res: (ie: both fields)
twofield.jpg

Hope that helps..

Re: Image looking jagged and pixelated

Thanks Loki, I'm checking that now. From what I've read, I think I have to have the Mojo to display both fields on the desktop.

Re: Image looking jagged and pixelated

Still looks the same. I digitized the clip into premiere and got the same effect. I'm gonna shoot some test footage tomorrow and mess around with my settings, see if I get teh same results. But thanks for all the suggestions.

Re: Image looking jagged and pixelated

Sure you set the DV codec options to FULL?

I think it cames Half res as default.
