Image in viewfinder and the actual image stored on tape

Hello folks,

I have noticed something weird on the DVX. Last year I shot a short film and I was using the viewfinder to frame my shots. I framed according to what I was seeing in the viewfinder. But, when I got the footage into the computer, I noticed that it captured more than what I was watching.
The funny thing is that when I play it on my TV, I don't see the extra footage I see on the computer.
This short I shot in letterbox. So, I thought it had something to do with letterbox. But, now I have noticed it again on a 4x3 image.

Has anyone experienced this? Do I have to use an external broadcast monitor to get an accurate frame?

most TVs will lose about 5% of the edge of the image to overscan ... in some cases could be 10% depending on age and quality.

the computer is showing you exactly what was recorded edge to edge, no problem. you can usually switch on guide bars in your editing software which will give you an idea of the "safe area" where you will want to keep any important information.

It is called overscan/underscan... the DVX does not see the full image in the viewfinder, and all consumer TV's do not see the full images as well.
To see the full image you require a broadcast monitor that can provide the overscan/underscaned image.

Hope that helps.

Thanks guys

But the thing is when I played it on my playstation on a 4x3 tv it showed the whole frames as well. Is there an explanation for this?
