iMac

I have a new Macbook pro on the way from China. (tracking fedex!! I wish I would have paid for a one day shipping to see if it could get here) Anyway they dropped the RAM price. So I'm getting 4GB RAM

Also remember that 3rd party RAM will void your Apple warranty.

no it doesn't.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=13946

"You may install memory (RAM, VRAM), and other customer-installable parts without voiding your Apple warranty.

Apple's warranty states:
"This warranty does not apply...if the product has been modified without the written permission of Apple..."

Adding memory (DRAM, VRAM) or other user-installable upgrade or expansion products to an Apple computer is not considered a modification to that Apple product. Therefore, it is not necessary to obtain Apple's written permission to upgrade or expand an Apple computer. While Apple strongly recommends that you retain the services of an Apple Authorized Service Provider to perform any product upgrades or expansions, you will not void your Apple warranty if you choose to upgrade or expand your computer yourself"

That is what the salesman told me at the Apple store. I will ask him. Maybe he makes a few extra bucks. But like I said the RAM price did drop. With my education discount going to 4GB RAM was only only like $350 more. I feel better having it in there. There is some 3rd party stuff that I wouldn't want. Some of the 3rd party is the same stuff Apple uses.
But anyway I'm getting

2.4GHz
4GB RAM
250 GB Hard drive
256MB video card
plus all the new stuff that is coming with the new line of computers and I save close to $300. My rendering time is going to drop big time and my son gets this Powerbook for college.

your salesman is an idiot. You can buy the same RAM that apples uses for about 95 bucks for 4 gigs off of the internet from OWC. Apple even includes instructions with their computers on how to install RAM.

If you can put gas in a car, you can install RAM in an apple product, it's that simple.

This is from 2004. Maybe it was changed? I don't know. Just going by what the guy from Apple told me last week. Like I told Jack maybe the Apple salesman makes a few extra bucks selling RAM. I'm going to ask.

However, it's on the official apple website under the "support" tab, so I doubt they would keep it up if they no longer allowed it.

Heck, my 2 month old MBP has a chapter in the manual called "installing new memory" that contains instructions on how to replace the memory myself.

here's a 6 month old thread discussing this on another forum:

Heck, here's a document on the apple website on the imac you're getting, describing exactly how to change out your memory.

I've always found when dealing with salesmen that if you make the assumption that he's an idiot and a thief, things go much more smoothly for me.

Well I have been looking around and it looks like your ok unless you install it wrong. Short something out. Bent a pin etc. Then Apple is going to say sorry.

I went to Apple discussion page and found stuff like this.

"Just clarifying. It will not void your waranty on other components, however you will no longer have waranty on the RAM itself. That will become your responsibility, however, as the RAM is half the price of the Apple RAM you can replace failed RAM and still not pay more than you would have by getting the Apple RAM in the first place.

RAM rarely has any problems, however make sure you install a matched set and be aware that RAM is very sensitive to static electricity. Make certain you are grounded and cannot pass a charge onto the RAM as you install it. The installation in the MBP is very fiddly and you will need a small phillips head screwdriver."

I pretty much knew what I wanted and would not have paid the $700 for the extra RAM. But with the price drop the extra 2GB of RAM wasn't a bad deal. I got the computer for close to $400 cheaper than what it was the day before and got a lot better computer.

So I'm happy.

as long as you're happy that's all that matters, ultimately.
