iMac & Video Editing

First of all, let me confess, I may know lots about PCs & Electronics..., BUT when it comes to MAC Computers, I know next to nothing!

I see Apple is offering the iMac 2.0GHz Intel Duo with 1GB Memory, 20" Monitor, and 250GB HDD for around $1,200. However I have no idea if this system has the processing power to do HD properly or not.

Comments for Mac Users as to whether this system would work OK or not would be very helpful...

Thanks,

Hey,

I used a 2.16ghz Core 2 Duo 24" iMac for a little under a year to edit basically everything in Final Cut Pro. It ran like a champ. I could edit 720p and 1080i/p in FCS 1 and 2 with a couple of filters on the footage, for example a flop for 35mm adapter footage and a color correction layer and still not have to render for real time full resolution playback.

I did have the upgraded video card, to 256mb but now the iMac's come standard with that, not the 1200 dollar one you mention though.

But yes, these iMacs, and even the white iMac's released late last year are MORE than capable of editing HVX footage , you will want to upgrade the ram of course, but thats cheap, especially if you dont go through apple.

These new iMacs are on the faster Santa Rosa bus speed of 800mhz as well.

You can see benchmarks comparing the systems here:

Ive been looking into it alot recently, and my new iMac 24" 2.8ghz Core 2 Extreme just arrived about an hour ago here at the office. :)

I have a PowerBook G4 and it does fine with HD from the hvx200. I wouldn't try to edit HDV, but the 720 PN from the hvx works fine.
