IMac versus MacBookPro

So I've narrowed my search of new computers down to either a 27 inch Imac with the 2.93 GhZ quad core I7 processor or the 15 inch MacBookPro with 2.66 GhZ Intel core I7. Now aside from one being a laptop and the other having a much bigger screen these computers are basically looking the same to me however I have gotten some people adamantly warning me against getting an IMac and that they've heard and experienced bad things with Imacs and Fincal Cut Pro working in tandem. IS there any truth to this? ANyone here agree or disagree? Seems to me they are the same processors with the same OS and so why should one handle FCP great and the other not but I'm just a stupid filmmaker so what do I know? Is this the older IMacs people are hating? Portability is not of the essence for me so should I go with the slightly better spec'd computer with the bigger monitor and the same price tag or what here? Help PLEASE!

What footage do you anticipate editing from what camcorder and what editing codec?

How dedicated drive to you anticipate using to edit from?

I have both - the imac and the MacBook Pro- and I own the HVX-
if I had to choose only one for editing I would choose the imac. I've never had any trouble. I used to have a tower which I miss more harddrive space, I use externals now, they can be a hassle.

I have a 24" 2.93 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Imac with 4 GB or ram and I love it for editing my HVX200 footage. A few months ago I edited a piece that was 1.5 hours long at 1080HD without any issues whatsoever. When it comes ot Macs, you really pay for the portability. So unless you absolutely need the laptop...you can get twice the computing pwr for half the price if you go with a desktop. I mean, you could almost get a Mac pro for what you'd pay for a moderately spec'd macbook pro. Imac i.m.o. No Brainer!

i7 laptop processor is NOT the same as the desktop version found in the iMacs. The slowest iMac i3 is faster than the fastest Macbook Pro.

Do some research and see that the mobile cpus they use are very different than the desktop.

Buy an imac and save money as any i3,5,7 will be faster than any Macbook Pro

If portability is crucial and editing DVCProHD footage is what you'll do, then the MBP is all you need. DVCProHD edit very easily.

You need to evaluate exactly what will be "faster" using the iMac over the MBP and by how much given your expected workflow.
