iMac - Paper weight to editing suite - HELP PLEASE

So I bought an iMac (late 2011) just over a year ago and to say that I'm underwhelmed would be an understatement. It's rubbish. It's clunky and can't really handle the most basic of tasks all that well. My 6 year old MacBook Pro outperforms it...

So I'm looking into solution for upgrading the video editing performance. I'm working with a lot of Red 4k footage, as well as h264 stuff and it's fine as long as I'm editing in quarter res. However, when it comes to rendering and exporting, things become mega-mo. 4 hours to export a 30min clean timeline.

So I was wondering what other people are doing to speed up performance?

A friend suggested getting a thunderbolt chassis like this http://www.sonnettech.com/product/ and then assigning processing tasks to a video card like this http://tinyurl.com/qhydn6a

Or can the iMac be opened up and modified? I've read that this isn't a good idea. Has anyone successfully done it?

Would be great to hear what you guys think and if anyone has any suggestions.

Cheers!

Yes, your RAM was way too low. When I bought my 2010 iMac, same specs as your 2011, it came with 8GB RAM, and I increased the RAM to 16GB. Definitely helped with FCP 7 and FCP X. Hopefully the additional RAM will correct the issues that you're now dealing with.
