iMac, new internal hard drive

my hard drive died so i took my computer to the apple store and they said it will be $280 for a new hard drive and $85 for them to install it. They also said i could probably find a cheaper one if i wanted to do that... So, would anyone recommend just having apple do it, or a cheaper hard drive? If i get it somewhere else, is there somewhere cheaper to install it?

To the OP, assuming the iMac needs a 3.5-inch drive, any good WD, Seagate, or Hitachi SATA HDD should work.

Confirm this with the Apple Store, and then try newegg.com or zipzoomfly.com.
