iMac for Final Cut Studio question

My 2006 era Mac Pro is on its last legs. The main 500GB (startup) HD only has 94GB remaining, and the computer spends a lot of time showing the spinning beach ball and locking up. I am thinking about buying a i7 iMac with the 256GB SSD and a 2TB HD. My question is, with the applications only (Final Cut Studio, Premier Pro - which I just bought for 50% off - and LR3, plus a few ancillary programs) on the 256GB SSD, how do I prevent the files FC and LR file inserts in the Library from filling the 256GB SSD? The video and photo files will be stored on a RAID (I’m tempted to try the Thunderbolt RAID).

Thanks!

Bill

Hi David, I really do not understand the use of the SSD drive. I was simply under the impression using it was significantly faster than a 7200 rpm HD. Is this not the case? I do worry about the low capacity (256GB).

Thanks,

Bill

It is significantly faster in opening applications, and in booting.

Things seem faster, etc. But it doesn't add anything to the editing experience at all.

I would suggest a fast, high capacity 7200 rpm boot drive, and put your money into the most powerful CPU, GPU, and in the external Thunderbolt device instead.

I would agree. Of course, SSD is nice and if youve got the budget for it, go nuts! 7200rpm drives are generally more than adequate and a SSD internal won't nearly give you the speed a RAID would, so you might as well drop the SSD and get a sweet Thunderbolt drive or something.

I will get the 12 TB Thunderbolt RAID, and it comes with both internal drives, the 2TB and the SSD. I worry about the 256GB SSD filling up with the various files FC and LR store on the drive with the Users and Library folder.

I have the new i7 iMac with a 256gb SSD and 1tb internal. Boot times and app load times are faster, but I wouldn't consider it amazing. For Final Cut, most of the time the app should be hitting other drives anyways. Put your scratch disks on your other internal drive or the RAID. Don't install anything but apps on your SSD.

Why are you storing yor LR files on your boot drive anyways? LR can still manage your libraries if they're sitting on another volume.

Ignorance, pure and simple. And the problem with moving them is (according to Adobe), I would lose the previews and changes I made in the past. I store the RAW files and the Tifs I output from LM on the RAID drives.

I managed to get the 2TB clone of my old 500GB start up disk to show up on the desktop at start up but connecting it via USB instead of Firewire, and everything worked, so it in now installed in the old Mac Pro, and I can wait until Apple releases a new Mac Pro instead of buying the iMac. Now I’m going to load Premier Pro in the Mac Pro and play with it. Thanks for all the suggestions and help!
