I'm trying to love vegas real hard..

but it keeps throwing me a curve ball, one of those special learning curve balls.

I'm coming to dvx first, so show me I made the right decision. Got 3 questions. Tried to find the answers through help manual but to much nonsense.

1.does vegas have a paste attributes function like say fcp or p.pro?

2.how do I get it so when I scrub the cursor the audio plays back during scrubbing?

3.How do I make it so events don't loop? When they get to end of original media they just stop?

I'm fcp & p.pro learned, so the curve is steep.

Thanks in advance.

Ready- set- go....

1.does vegas have a paste attributes function like say fcp or p.pro?

Yes. Right click on clip ("event" on the timeline) with attributes, choose Copy. Right click on clip you wish to apply attributes to and choose Paste Event Attributes. If you wish, you can use the Select Tool and select multiple events to paste to.

2.how do I get it so when I scrub the cursor the audio plays back during scrubbing?

Using your J, K, and L keys, or scrubber grabby thingy that you see over to the left...the slider with the little orange arrow under it.

3.How do I make it so events don't loop? When they get to end of original media they just stop?

Right click clip ("event" on the timeline, choose Switches, uncheck Loop.

I would strongly suggest picking up Douglas Spotted Eagles Vegas Workshop 5 book. Yeah.....I know its for 5, but the differences as far as learning the program go are negligable, and the book will give you such a solid start it's amazing. I can almost certainly promise you that once you get all the basics down and start experimenting with the deeper capabilities, you will wonder how you ever learned Premier to begin with, and why anyone would design an NLE in such a strange, counterintuitive manner. That's no brainwashed loyalist hype, either. Meantime, we'll help you out.

Thanks for the replies Daniel. Lets clarify some things. But before we do, I have DSE's Vegas 5 workshop book and instant vegas. Read both.

I understand the paste attributes now.

On question two, so if I grap the cti and move it along the timeline, theres no way I can here sound? Only through jkl and actual scrubber?

On question 3 there is no way to set a preference where all "events" on the timelime don't loop? Kinda breaks the workflow to have to do it for each event, even if I ctrl select. Want it to be implied/native already to all "events".

I'll go double check the book, feel free to give me your awnsers on this though, just to clarify.

Thanks in advance.

You can hear sound, just hold the CTRL key, or use the JKL shuttle keys, either way.

If you don't want events to loop, then turn that off in prefs.

O.k. So on question 2, the awnser is no I can't grab the cti and move along the timeline and hear sound(ctrl drag is just another way of using actual scrubber). Put it on the wishlist for next time I guess.

I did find in your book where it says media that is not looped will be treated as blank media on the overextended part.
So the awnser for me is no, no setting where media will stop extending at the end of the original content. Roger All that. Put that on the wishlist for next time too.

Thanks Daniel and Spot.

The media may not physically stop if you extend it too far, but it does let you know that you've gone past the end (there's a little triangle head that shows up that points to the true end of the video) and it also has an elastic "snap" at the end of the source video as you try to extend it past its actual end...

Thats weird.....on my machine, I can just grab the little silver thing at the curser, the little rectangle just above the timeline (cti? is that what that is?) with a left click and then move my mouse ball (I use a tracball mouse) to either the left or right and it scrubs with sound.

But I went to the Editing tab in Prefs and told it not to loop by default and it still does. I too share your desire for control over that...rarely ever would I desire my video clips to loop.

Well for anyone who wants to know, I found out if right click and grab the top of the cti and move along the timeline(while holding right mouse button, you can hear audio. Not as accurate as say fcp, or p.pro. And not as simple/intuitive either.

What version of Vegas are you using? In Vegas 6, you can scrub with audio by dragging the playhead around. Also by dragging with the left or right mouse button, you can get shuttle or jog-type audio feedback while scrubbing.

IMHO, the audio feedback is actually more accurate than FCP, especially since you can quickly zoom in on the timeline and very accurately close in on the audio sample that you want.

Can you help me understand why the ability to loop a clip is a bad thing? I too come from an FCP background and find Vegas' ability to loop a clip just by dragging the end of the clip incredibly flexible. If I want it, it's there, if not, I simply don't drag beyond the end of the clip. If I've trimmed too much of the clip and need to drag the end point out a bit, I don't worry about looping because, as Barry mentioned, it will "snap" when the end is reached, as well as providing a visual indicator of the clip's boundries (little upside-down triangle at the top edge of the event) so that I never pass the end of the clip.

I'm using 6c. Yeah I already mentioned ctrl drag(same as using jog shuttle/scrubber) and just mentioned right click drag top of cti. Just that in p.pro all you do is grab cti and move along timeline and you hear every sound. Slightly more simple. Seems to make sense that everytime you drag the cti your gonna wanna hear sound. Doesnt seem "intuitive" to have to click and hold a mouse button to do so. Oh well no big deal.

As far as looping, I don't know, never had to loop something aside from menu backgrounds for a dvd. So why make looping native to an nle. I mean come on.
Oh yeah, because Vegas is primarily and audio editor(or was). Why on god's green earth would you want to loop a video event? As far as event extending beyond there original length, well..in the flow of things it takes an extra second to say "hey I'm beyond my content, let me snap it back". While in p.pro if you want to get to the end of and event you know you just grab the edge and toss that mouse left or right, BAM your at the end.!! Don't deny you editors are always looking to shave a second or two off your workflow time.
Dang it it is just annoying to me, but I'll get used to it. All hail Vegas. Muhahaha
