GH3 i'm over GH3 - where to

Using step up rings mean that all your lenses have the same filter diameter and that you only need one vari ND. When you swap your lens over you also swap your ND. Really adds no time to swapping a lens. You can use a lens cap with a vari ND. I agree, built in ND is preferable but far from a deal breaker if you think about your setup and do it right.

Still have to buy the ND's, no caps for them when sitting on the lens, separate flags for sunlight unless you're using rails - small problem but another complication and bunch of trade-offs. A built in filter wheel would help.

I have all my lenses with stepup rings to 77mm and a Genus Eclipse 77mm ND filter with a 3in1 rubber hood from genus which has turned out to be my favourite way to shade the lens because it works for wide angle and telephoto. All it takes is to change the lens and screw on the filter/hood combo and I'm good to go. If I know I will need to do a lot of focal length changes I opt for a zoom.

I use the Eclipse on the C300 I use at work in order to get easier exposure because I find the built in ND wheels don't allow fast changes without having to change the ND and ISO and aperture to get proper exposure. The Vari ND allows me to dial in between stops much quicker during run and gun stuff like musical artist follows or BTS shoots.

Thanks for the tip I'll try that. I guess what I'm saying is that it's a DSLR complexity rather than GH3. I had one of those days where I had 3 bodies on the go at the same time with different lenses, different rigs and it all got complicated.

I haven't shot with a traditional video camera, but I understand the advantages of their ergonomics and a few key features (built in ND filters, XLR mic inputs, wave form displays). Depending on what and how you shoot, those features alone can make your shoots more productive. With my GH cameras, I have to screw on ND filters, use dual sound recording and evaluate exposure on a Zacuto Z-Finder. Any camera with those features built in is beyond my current needs and budget. Meanwhile, I'm really grateful for DSLRs and add on tools.

Two months ago, I assisted a shoot with someone using a RED Epic. Some of the shots were in tight quarters, one of which was in a car. He told me that really missed his DSLR!
