I want to make a scene where a guy is on a boat fishing when he catches the biggest fish in his life and I want it to look like a 2d or pencil animation, is there anyway to do that in After Effects?

Sure, you CAN, but I'm wondering how smooth you want it to look, and how much time you're willing to put into it. If you're wanting it to look kinda like a Southpark animation, it wouldn't be too difficult, but animating it would take a while. How proficient are you with After Effects WITHOUT using tutorials?

You're going to need Photoshop or Illustrator, too, unless you have a scanner and you're handy with a pencil.

ToonBoom is probably the best software to do this digitally.

It's doable in After Effects, and I know animators who animate inside AE, but they hand-draw every key frame first and scan it in.

Yeah, like south park would work, I just want to have tye boat, two people in it, a rough sea with big waves and that's it basically. The south park look would work great, I don't need it to be super smooth, a bit jagged and "artsy" is the look I had in mind

As to after effects, I learned to use it from Andrew kramer like a billion other proper, but I didn't follow his tutorials step by step so I know my way around the program abit more than those who just followed his directions to the dot. I'd sq I'm low to mid level intermediate

@VCASSEL

Well if that's the route you want to go, I'd design everything in PS and animate it in AE. But you might want to look into jscott's mention of ToonBoom. I'm not familiar, but if there's an easier way that's a huge plus! Also, to save you some time, you could even buy some basic things like the boat, fish, person, environment from istock and animate those.

Doesn't ToonBoom rely on more or less the same 'puppeting' animation concept that After Effects does? It's been a few years since I've researched it, but it didn't strike me as being such a departure from what After Effects is capable of. Personally, for 2D stuff I 3D model and animate in 3Ds Max and then cel render the results.
