They both had an 8 Bit 4:2:2 output
Ok, lets get this straight. That is incorrect.....kinda. The Sony FS 100 can output 8 bit 4:4:4. The Panasonic cannot. Jan and some others may tell
you that there isn't that much of a difference. I'm not here to argue that, I'm here to state the facts. The Sony can output 4:4:4. Now finding a recorder to
take that 4:4:4 signal may be expensive.....but it is not totally correct to say they both output 8 bit 4:2:2. Well, actually it IS correct as they
both can output 8 bit 4:2:2. It's just that the Sony can additionally output 8 bit 4:4:4.
There are some guys on this site that feel that you should by the Sony because that is what they did and they think it is a better camera, but frankly it is just a different camera to accomplish the same task. The AF100 brings more to the table right now with a free lens included, internal ND filters, 20 steps of Variable Frame Rates in 1080P, Waveform Monitor, more rugged build quality with an ergonomic design and a 3 year warranty.
It's not JUST a different camera to accomplish the same task. The AF100 has advantages including internal ND filters and more steps in the variable
frame rate, and a waveform monitor. The Sony has advantages as well although you may not hear a lot about them on this forum. The Sony has a
bigger sensor (shallower depth of field and wider angle of view if using the same lens on both cameras). It is better in low light. It has expanded
focus which allows you to see what is in focus much easier than on the AF100. I think the highlight handling is better. And I think the LCD screen is
better......and I already mentioned the 4:4:4 output from the Sony FS-100. Look, I'm trying to be fair, they are both great cameras. But to say that
'some on this board think you should buy a Sony just because they did.' or that the 'AF100 brings more to the table right now' are definitely matters
of opinion. As a Panasonic rep, I can understand that you feel your camera is the best and you SHOULD be proud of it....but I don't think it's anywhere
near as 'cut and dry' as you do. I think they both have advantages and disadvantages if it was such a 'slam dunk' that the AF 100 was better,
I doubt there would be nearly the number of people agonizing to choose between them. It's a HARD HARD decision. I know, I've been there and had
to choose. I really wish I could combine the features I like from both of them.....well I kinda could but then we are talking about the F3
which is 13 grand instead of 5 grand.
That said, to the original poster, congratulations on the AF100! It's awesome and you will love it. Have fun and don't worry about it,
you just make your choice, and then use what you get. Either of these cameras can do such nice stuff that it will almost always be your
skills that limit you and not the camera. They are really, really, really good. It's amazing what you can own for 5 grand these days,
just amazing!
