I'm a fool. Help wanted for beginner.

I don't know how I became so lucky, but I've gotten myself a DVX100B. I also have the AT897 for a mic, but I have one large problem: I have no idea how to even plug the mic into the camera. This is how much of a beginner I am. Honestly I feel like a fool for even needing to ask. All of your tips would be very useful to me. Thank you.

You need an XLR cable. The cable in your picture is for cameras with a 1/8" mini jack. You need an XLR to XLR cable.

get a 3 footer XLR at guitar center ($6) connect it to input 2
set both channel selects to input 2, Phantom power to input 2

anything over three red squares in the meter will be a bit too loud.
