Ted Schilowitz from RED said in one of his interviews (sorry, cant find the link) that all current DLSRs really just upsample a 720p stream.

I checked out some 1080p samples from D7000 on vimeo and tried to compare them to my D3s (which is 720p). To be honest i didnt pick out much difference in sharpness and resolution, if any at all.

This of course could have a gadzillion reasons - vimeo compression, bad glass on d7000, poor workflow or encoding or simply didnt find good samples etc.

Im just picking a camera for underwater and video is one of considerations.

The same people handling the Scarlet project? Won't pay attention to anything they say.

Also the same people behind One and Epic. Social Network, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Hobbit etc. Also Cameron just bought 50 epics apparently. So i would say that counts for something ;-)

Ted Schilowitz is talking out of his Arse to make that vapour ware of his look better, The resolved res is about 720p of the 1080p file. the best HDSLR is the GH2 which has about 1000 x 1000 line resolved (that's from the built-in in encoder) . the RED Scarlet sensor wont get 3K resolved res out of it, the estimate is that it will be about 2k which is a bit bigger than 1080p.

That interview is full of **** he goes on to say that "still cameras can shoot at 2500 iso to an extent" and then he goes on to makes a big deal about the Scarlet shooting at 13000 iso.... The D7000 shoot at iso upto 25,000... Ted Schilowitz is an idiot

Yes. But those examples are in a completely different price league from a DSLR - so thats like comparing apples and oranges. Only the Scarlet is worth comparing with DSLR's in order to have any meaningful discussion - and at the moment the Scarlet is still vaporware.

For the most part, he is correct. Even the Sony F35 and Alexa don't quite hit 1080p resolved resolution.

The GH2 is way above 720p though.

1080P file format or not, no DSLR resolves more than about 500 lines vertical, even less alias free.

Complete BS... why bother even posting it, you clearly have not run any tests?... The GH2 has plenty more than 500v lines with very little aliasing.

There you go.

I kind of expected a more technical discussion of how much resolution DSLRs actually get.

Not pointing fingers ar RED. I provided the link simply as a food for thought.

I kind of expected a more technical discussion of how much resolution DSLRs actually get.

The technical reasons are
1: the codes are not as good as they could be (GH2 is the exception to the rule)
2: most DSLRs line skip meaning they average the 9 vertical pixels and skip 9 lines down the sensor (the D90 line skips as well but in a random way causing stairs in the image) GH2 doesn't do this an averages from pixels.
3: the use of bayer senor pattern reduces information to 2 green 1 blue and red for each pixel. bring this back to one pixel costs res over using say a foveon sensor
4: anti-analysis filter is above most sensors it helps reduce jaggedness from the image but softens the image in return.

It's worth keeping in mind that this is still very new technology and as good as free (the DSLRs are no more expensive because of the video feature).

With the exception of the GH2, the rest are still running on 1st generation technology and it shows. I expect alot more from the next generation cameras.... the GH2 has already shown the way forward.
