Do not purchase this lamp for your kids, If you have one get rid of it. My daughter was playing in her room when she came downstairs screaming there was a fire in her room. I bolted upstairs to find the lamp, table, and rug on fire. I was able to stomp out the melted plastic on the rug and smother the table fire but if no one would have been home the whole place would have went up. We put the correct Ikea lightbulb in the lamp as the instructions stated. damn thing just went up and could have taken everything with it. Wife has been on the phone with coporate trying to get this resolved she even spoke with the president. Just wanted to let anyone know that if you have this lamp. DITCH IT. Thank god we were home and my kids were not hurt.

Until we get tough on cheap imports I am afraid we will hear more stories like this, some with far more tragic endings.

Besides contacting IKEA, you should email this story (with pictures if you have them) to the editors at The Consumerist (http://consumerist.com/). The Consumerist is owned by the folks who do Consumer Reports, and your story is exactly the kind of stuff that they cover.

THAT is really scary. Good of you to get the word out Richard.
Glad you and your family are ok.

Thanks guys. I will tell my wife about the consumerist today. We have plenty of pictures. Ikea is replacing the carpet and table we purchased from them. They are off of my shopping list for anything that requires electricity. forever.

The odd part of this story is that one hour before that happened I was sitting on the couch in the basement and the smoke alarm alert started to chirp that the batteries needed changing. So I went through our ENTIRE house and took out all of the 9 volts. We went to the store and came back home and I forgot the batteries not even 15 minutes later our entire upstairs was filled with smoke and the detectors were not operating.

Holy Sh@T!!! My daughter has the exact same lamp! How long did you have it? She's had it for several years now.

We have had it for about 6 months. We have changed the bulb twice. But we have had the same one before. They did a slight design change from the older versions and the last one worked fine for years.

wow oh wow...so glad you guys are alright. Glad your home is okay too. This could have been a disaster on all fronts. I am thankful your kids are okay (and darn smart and brave too!)

With the smoke alarm thing it sounds like someone was looking out for you. Could be a good short film??? No pun intended with the "short".
