Looks promising and offers an alternative to the saturated DSLR camera accessories market, but I am not sure they hit the nail on the head with this one. First off, the way the handles are fastened to the plate. If they are only held on by one screw, then what is preventing them from swinging inward, or outward. I wouldn't imagine this is the case, but just thinking aloud. It would only be truly modular if you could connect the handles at different points on the plate in order to accommodate additional accessories, or configurations.
Also, the direction they have the camera mounted on the plate would make the unit very nose heavy and place a lot of stress on the users' wrists and forearms. They just need to spin the unit around 180 degress so the handles are in front of the camera and that would give the entire unit a more balanced CG. Not sure it is possible with the current design of the handles and the available rods and rod mount.
The cost for the Basic is $250 and the Deluxe a whopping $350. I am not so sure I would completely sign off on this one just yet. For $30 less you can get a U-Boat Commander Kit 2 from IDC Photography, which in my opinion offers quit a few advantages over the Ikan model when used with a Canon 7D or 5D Mark II, including but not limited to, more mounting options for accessories, more handle placement options, additional protection to the camera and lens through its cage like design, as well as access to the battery without needing to remove the plate. You be the judge, and if anyone gets one to review, let us all know how it works and feels.
