Ignorant upgrade?

Yo.

I'm currently running CS3 Production Premium on this: http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/1014737R/1014737Rsp3.shtml

with an upgraded GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161061

and 4GB of RAM.

I'm mostly editing P2 footage from an HPX-170 and a bit from a 5D Mark II.

I'm looking to upgrade to CS5 and am looking at these computers to run it:

Dell SX8100-2777NBC (Google Search: http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8&q=SX8100-2777NBC), sorry the link to Best Buy won't post, it's the 4th link down.

Will one of these be enough for this, or am I just being a moron?

I guess what my question really breaks down to is: Do I have to spend $3000+ on an editing machine? What does that $2000 dollar price difference get me?

Thanks so much!

CS5 requires a 64bit ver of win 7 so make sure you get that.
All the machines you linked to are using ATI vid cards. (which will work with CS5 but if you get Nvidea video card you can get to use/enable the Mercury playback engine of CS5 which will make your box work MUCH better.) CS5 only officially supports a few models of the nvidea cards but there is a fairly easy hack to make it work with many of the unsupported models of nvidea cards (google cs5 video hack for what models may work)

You don't need a $3K machine, just 8-12 gigs of ram, 2-3 big video harddisks and a nvidea card that is either supporting mercury playback engine (or one that you can hack)

Thanks for the advice, sir!

You can get away with a low budget if you build it from scratch, especially with Ram and Video Cards ect. Buying those upgrades from dell or hp for example just overprice what you could do it for. Just a thought. you just need to know how to build it, but now computers are being built Tool less, which should of been done from day 1!
