if you could only have 3 lights in your inventory...

what 3 lights would you choose that are versatile enough for narrative, interview, documentary, etc. type shooting.

No "every light has it's use in different scenarios." lets say you have a gun to your head and you HAVE to choose 3 of your favorite lights you wouldn't want to be stuck without!

3 lights isn't enough for anything but maybe an interview.

But if you want to know what three you should have for an interview: A fluo and a couple of 650 fresnels and enough accessories to make them work. Barn doors, dimmers, gels. And if it's really only for interviews you could swap out one of the 650's for a 250.

One light is enough if that's all you have.

Lately I've been going minimalist, so controls are more important to me. That means reflectors and diffusers. Reflectors need stands, but I'd assume they don't count in this.

And yeah, Barry's right.

i would pick two 1k Fernels and a 2k baby zip I am able to do a lot with those and accessories

LOL!!

Nah, I'd key with the 12k outside pushing through some muslin, then put the bounce the image 85 off two walls for the fill. Barger can be down the hall as a hair light and background light.

VERY flexible setup.

Everyone is into the existing light stuff these days and getting fixtures off the floor, so with this system, you can light from outside and an adjacent room. Just use on-set practicals to motivate the light and you're all set.

I do hope you know I was being a smart-a** there.

A 12k will do just about anything (night for day, anyone?)... but at $28k...

Of course! I thought it was hilarious...

He didn't give us a budget, but if I could only have 3 lights, I'd want something with power, something with control, and something super soft.

Hmm... Trapped on a deserted island, can only have 3 lights,....

2 Tota lights (with umbrellas)
1 Omni light

In documentary film, those three have served me for just about everything. If I could add
two more, 1 pro light, 1 Rifa softbox.

Budget $600

3 lights is definitely enough if they're big enough.

2 650 fresnells and 1 1k open face (w/ chimera)

Or

1 650 fresnell and 1 1k open face (w/ chimera) and 1 kino 4'-4bank

2 1k fresnels and one baby junior. This along with Chimeras, reflectors, beadboard. scrims, the proper grip and stands would barely get it done for me....but it would work for an interview.
