If $$$ was not a problem, what novel would you make into a movie?

The Bible...as a mockumentary?

This reminds me of the episode of RED DWARF where Holly the computer claims that the first page to the Bible had been found and read "the following is a work of fiction. any resemblance to characters living or dead is purely coincidental."

As for a book... can't think of one, but there are some graphic novels that come to mind...

POISON ELVES (but use the original title of "I, LUSIPHER")

100 BULLETS (could make for a nice little action film)

and of course a live action version of THE MAXX.

If money was no object I would love to do Napoleon the Stanley Kubrick screenplay, The Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie and Tropic of Cancer by Henry Miller.

So where's all the money you guys where talking about?

Book into movie....

Book into movie....

Pillars of the Earth. Correctly

Starship Troopers. Very Correctly. Not missing out on the social commentary. I read this book twice a year. Still love it, still tear up when the Lt buys it.

Frankenstien. They way Mary wrote it, not the way everyone else including Brannagh did it.

Just a couple.

The Sun Also Rises. Hemingway. I know it's been done, but I haven't seen it, nor have I heard much about it (could just be me -- I'm young). Anyway, done well, I think it could be fantastic. Cinematography of Spanish countryside, bullfights, etc. could be breathtaking. Story is great, too, with that Hemingway style of leaving everything just below the surface...

Also, for Rosestar -- Franny and Zooey could be interesting. One giant piece of dialogue, fully exploring a single complex and moving relationship. Kind of like "Before Sunrise," only much better...

All the Pern books by Anne McCaffrey
Alvin Maker books and Ender books by O. Scott Card
The Earth Children Books, starting with a remake of Clan of the Cave Bear done properly(!) by Jean Auel

My choice would be "Stranger in a Strange Land", by Harlan Ellison.

It is my sincere hope that "Stranger in a Strange Land" is never, ever, ever made into a movie.

As you might guess from my screen name, I'm a big, big fan.

I Am Legend by Richard Matheson

(I hope no one makes this until the God's are positive I am never going to be a filmmaker)

Probably my favourite book of all time...

1984 by George Orwell.

Hands down that would be on the top of the list for me.

It's been done a couple of times . . .

I read 5 pages of the thread before realizing how old it was.

Mine: Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace, because I love his short stories and I don't have time for his longer (1079 pages!) ones yet.

Dante's Inferno... not quite a novel but wow what a Tim Burtonesque film it would make.
Depp could be Dante' ha
Chhers

Legacy of Heorot by Larry Niven

I have wnated to make this movie since High School when I first read it.

Also someone already mentioned Ender's Game, that book to holds a special place in my heart.

I don't see the logic in making a Farenheit 451 movie. It's a book about the virtues of the written word. People should be reading it, not watching it passively in a theater...
Then do it in some off the wall language and subtitle it :) I have wanted to do The Warhound and the World's Pain by Michael Moorecock... or Earth X, which is a series of comics and not a novel, but very intriguing nonetheless.

...and of course a live action version of THE MAXX.

No that could be quite the spectacle. +1 for this idea. If it was up to me, I'd end it before the whole ten yrs later part of the story, and give Dr. gone his own film about his past.

The alchemist, by Paulo Coelho.

This could be a beautiful piece of art, IMHO. Maybe something with a more 'EURO'-feel to it.

My top three:

A Prayer For Owen Meany - Drama
"Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman" - Comedy
In Praise of Plants - Documentary
