If this thing had a Cardbus 32 slot on it, it would be perfect.

Still need a monitor etc.

Instead of that, look to the President's Day sales coming up next week; you'll probably be able to score a full-fledged laptop computer with cardbus slot for somewhere around $399.

What you want is something like this, with a firewire input, and a 7" LCD strapped into a single enclosure; that you could mount onto an arm on your tripod...

Hey presto - your own FireStore and monitor in one...

I'm thinking about dismantling a MacMini to see what I can build.

I don't think so.

I don't think so.

It's a full computer the size of an internal cd rom drive, just add laptop hard drive, and power source (can be battery) and dump your footage via usb.

Dude, it's USB 1, and no FireWire. It would take days to dump footage. This thing's specs are so outdated as to be nearly worthless for anything video-related, regardless of its size.

Well... yes... and it does say the magic "CardBus" word, so maybe it'd actually work. No specific mention of 32-bit though.

If it supports 32-bit CardBus cards then yes, you may have found what we've been looking for.

sorry, just to reiterate:

Sony Vaio C1 (later models better)

Has cardbus, firewire, runs XP, weighs about 2lbs.
Replace the 2.5" drive for something faster+bigger....

No one else think this is a good solution?

Yeah, It's a good solution, but for a feeder to hard drive (internal or external), it starts to get expensive. I think what most are looking for is an inexpensive means to put footage imediately from the camera to some sort of storage device.

I think the target price is currently the P2 store price of $1,500, while most want to spend under $800 for this service. The device does not need to have the fastest cpu, as it is only used to transfer footage, not edit it. With all that said, the cheap laptop solution would be best, as they are down to around $550 (what I just paid) then add external firewire hard drive for another $150 for 100 gigs or so. Total price $700 (under the $800 target most would like to spend for this service). Your small laptop solution is great, what you get from the small size you pay for with 2 things, one being the small size, the other being the sticker that says sony.

For the money I will need on other things, I would rather have the Gateway mx6131 with wide screen for $550. It's still a small laptop, just not as small as the viao
Specs: Celeron M 360 1.4 gig cpu, 1mg cache, 400mhz front side bus (not fast, but you don't need this much for simple transfers)
15.4 wide screen Ultrabright wxga tft glossy (looks nice, but downside is low refresh rate )
RAM 512 MB DDR
40 gig hard drive.
dvd player, cd writer
sd memory card reader
cardbus 32 reader for P2 cards
wireless g lan
windows xp service pack 2

You can get a similiar Toshiba laptop at best buy for $500, but the Gateway also has firewire that the toshiba and others in this price range do not.

This will be my transfer solution untill the P2 store drops below $800.
