If its not one thing its another...

FWIW: I never figured out what caused my "strobing" issue in Premiere Pro either. I rendered out an AVI and it was fine. I authored to DVD . . . it played back fine on a DVD player hooked up to a CRT. I made one trim edit on some titles in the original timeline and repeated above. Strobing on the DVD on an NTSC CRT monitor. Weird. It was not shot weird. There were no "overbright" areas in the scene. My only conclusion is . . . I think Premiere Pro/Adobe Encore is weird and makes buggy video.

Thanks for the testimony NBC.

Later, when I get through work (1030pm) I plan to apply some changes and take some suggestions and apply it to my clips. I "deinterlaced" footage and exported to a DVD. But, I haven't had a chance to look at the footage yet. I'm anxious. I'm not too optimistic, but I'm anxious. If it doesn't work, I think I'm going to scrap the entire F'ing thing and re-edit the ENTIRE freaking thing for the 3rd time at 50%. God knows I've got plenty of time to do that......umm...yeah....

Thanks again for the testimony. Now I don't feel so inept or crazy...

Rick

Okay guys. Here is an update. For the amount of input that all of you have spent the time to give me, I definitely owe it to you. Khmuse, overnighttolondon, mikko, nbcshooter, here is the latest!

I went into the initial CUT version. The version with JUST the transitions that was NOT giving me strobing. I right clicked on the individual clips, went into FIELD OPTIONS and clicked ALWAYS DEINTERLACE.

I exported it to a DVD. It WORKED!!! I almost pooped my pants on the spot. But, I didn't want to say anything here yet because I didn't want to prematurely celebrate. Even the footage brought into a NEW Sequence as an entire clip lost the strobing. So, I am thinking, "this was the problem".

So, at this point, I am convinced that it did in fact have something to do with this. However, when I export to DVD, it was fine, as I mentioned but when I rendered it out as an AVI, and imported the clip, the strobing was still apparent.

So, I'm not sure what to think at this point. Part of me is elated that I got it to unstrobe, even if for a brief time. So, deinterlacing seems to work. So, to recap...I deinterlaced the initial cut footage. I brought it into a NEW sequence and no strobing. I exported it to DVD (after the deinterlacing) and no strobing. But, if I render it out as an AVI and bring it back in to the project, it strobes. What the F? Why would making an AVI file do this?

This crap is exhausting the hell out of me. I try one thing, I tweak another, I patiently wait to render it out...etc. It's killing me. Sheesh.

I mean, I want to keep a single AVI of the finished chapter (so that I can delete all of the source files and begin a new chapter, so that I may DVD author ALL of them with ENCORE in the future) but if it keeps strobing????

Also, color corrections are giving me fits. I add an effect, and it takes years to render out, even on a small bit of footage, only to find out it is still strobing. Ugh. I brought the deinterlaced footage into a new sequence with no strobing. I re-cut the segments that I wanted to apply certain color corrections to. At this stage, I am only adding BLUE GRAD, to help tint the skies and upper portion of the shot. Fine. But, I bring THIS second generation clip into another new sequence so that I may cut it up AGAIN to add WhITE DIFFUSION, but its strobes all over again. Adding to that, the point where the BLUE GRAD and the WHITE DIFFUSION meet, its not a smooth transition. They overlap for some stupid reason, causing a brief BLIP in the footage.

Could someone please drive over to my house and do this for me? That or send me a vile of cyanide. Dealing with this, my pre-visualization class, rehearsals, job, Christmas shopping, and I am nearly going to pop.

Rick

PS Okay, maybe you won't send me cyanide. Then, how about just a tip on how to use two different color correction effects on two succeeding clips when the clip is joined by a DISSOLVE transition? That DISSOLVE seems to be messing everything up???

Okay...once and for all...lets step away from the strobing problem for a sec. Good God. If I have TWO clips, both joined with a dissolve, what is the single best way to apply an effect to the first clip that differs from the effect on the second clip without getting them to clash in the middle (during the dissolve)?

During a definitive cut, the clips work well with one another. But, with a dissolve the clips, in effect overlap and cause a BLIP with the competing effects. It's pissing me off. I've tried elongating the dissolve. Shortening the dissolve. Playing with the effect features to start it later in the clip. None of these have worked. There has got to be a more efficient way...no?

Rick

What type of dissolve are you applying to these clips?

Have you added key frames so that you can have more control over the dissolve?

Yes, I have tried to apply keyframes to have more control over the clips. However, I still get glitches. The cuts that I have in the chapter are simple; they are either straight cuts or transition dissolves. The straight cuts are great. Obviously, they bring one clip straight to another. However, the dissolve molds to clips together. The molding of two clips seems to be tricky. There is a period where the two clips meet, within the dissolve, that causes the two effects to NOT play nicely with one another. That is the problem that I am having; is getting the two clips to play nicely with one another without causing a BLIP.

Any ideas? God knows, I already owe you a KEG of beer Khmuse. I'll make due on my promise, I promise...

Rick

Do the transitions work without any other FX applied ?

I assume you have adequate "handles" on these clips???

Have you tried the "dip to black" dissolve?

Can you better describe the "BLIP" that is occurring? I am not certain that I fully understand what the problem is.

Boy, won't it feel great once you finish editing this project!

yes, actually. the transitions work fine without the fx. my handles are definitely long enough. when there is a dissolve transition, im just not sure of the best way to apply multiple effects so the effects play nicely with one another.

i cut the footage and added the transitions. Then, I brought that sequence into a NEW sequence so it would be one single clip. I recut the clip at the transition points and applied one effect, blue grad. I am only using two effects: blue grad and white diffusion. and, i dont use them on the same clips. its either blue grad OR white diffusion.

When I bring this new sequence into a third generation sequence, and add the white diffusion, it doesnt fly. what happens is the blue grad effect spills a little bit into the next clip. the next clip, which has white diffusion causes a blip at the transition point where the two effects meet. instead of there being a very precise point where one effect ends and the other begins there is a brief collision that results in a slight brightness pop.

if you have any ideas, im all ears (eyes)...

Oh man, you have no freaking idea. NO freaking idea. At this point, YOU should feel great once I finish editing this project. I mean, it's as if you've been holding my hand the entire time. So, I'll let you know when its time for us to celebrate.

I have learned SO much on just this one project. Scratch that. I have learned so much on just this one chapter. I just want to get this chapter completed. Now that you've helped me with the compression issues, and it seems like I have somewhat of a handle on the strobing footage (though it still does it with rendered AVI files...), that once I understand how to best apply these effects I will be able to finish the other chapters in a fraction of the time it has taken me to finish this single one.

As for what the BLIP looks like, it is almost like a quick spike in brightness. Like when more lights are turned on a room that already has lights. The white diffusion effect should be applied to the ENTIRE clip. However, it seems to kick in a few frames into the dissolve causing there to be a noticeable point at which the effect "appears", for a lack of a better term. I hope that makes sense. I think it has to do with understanding the timing of when I should apply these effects to get them to execute properly.

I do like your suggestion to DIP TO BLACK. I will try this. However, I will be annoyed if this is the avenue I have to take. It'd be nice to know that I have complete creative control over this chapter without having to make sacrifices. That is what is so frustrating. I want to tell the clip to do what I want it to do and have it do it. So, this experience has been an excellent learning experience. Frustrating, but excellent.

I will go ahead and give the DIP TO BLACK a try.

Thanks.
Rick

Looking forward to the next installment of this series. I will be curious to see if the dip to black transition solves the issue (if it does, then I have an idea as to what is happening).

"I recut the clip at the transition points "

Sounds like you are re-cutting to add more transitions in a nested sequence. I can not imagine that working AT ALL.

Think about it....

A nested sequence is directly related to the original sequence. ie. If you make a change in the original timeline - the nested sequence will update automatically and accordingly. So what you are doing is messing up the nested sequence which is still trying to reflect the original timeline and the 'instructions such as transition here' by adding a new instruction such as -"now add another transition over the other one"

You are cutting into the original "instructions" . They do not exist in the nested sequence.

Your blips are the result.

(Maybe I read your workflow incorrectly)

Wait a minute are you using Magic Bullet?? What is the "white diffusion" you're using?

LOL, it would be so simple if this was the problem - MB has a known bug with this, you can download the patch from their website.

Are you kidding me? Yes, I am using magic bullet. The software copy that came with my camera. I would be so elated and pissed at the same time if this was the fix. ha. I will check it out.
Thanks.

Things that make you say "wtf".

Did you ever mention using MBs in all your many previous posts about the many issues you have encountered?

No, unfortunately I did not. This will teach me to describe EVERY aspect of a problem in the future.

I have downloaded the patch. I am still getting the flicker but am unsure as to why. So, I will keep plugging away at it and will let you know how it works out. Hopefully, this is a problem that many of you can avoid in the future.

As the old expression goes... "the devil's in the details". You never know what little piece of information is the critical one that will let someone jump ahead to a solution.

I am still curious to learn if the dip to black transition behaves better.

Khmuse-

Yes, dipping to black seems to work. There is definitely no flicker when the black subsides and the transition is complete. I don't know if this is a result of it being the BLACK transition masking, darkening, or hiding the problem or if its because it is a different transition all together. In the end, I might acutally bust out a few of these, if I need to.

overnighttolondon-
I've added the patch. and re-rendered. Still getting the flicker. I think its in my workflow. I might have to recut something and re-apply effects and try it from scratch. Im real tired tonight. So, I will give it a go in the morning.

Thanks all for your patience, insight and most of all willingness to re-visit this never ending thread. Hopefully, someone will stumble across it and learn as much as I have.

UPDATE Magic Bullet is the antichrist.

Hello gang, long time no update. I have been feverishly trying to wrap up my semester and have very busy. When I graduate in May, I am going to get drunk.

I have contacted a man by the name of John at magic bullet, via email, and told him that I was STILL getting the flicker even after the plug-in. He suggested that I reboot while holding down the shift key. This didn't work for me. I also re-applied and re-rendered the effects and transitions with no luck. So, I sent him another email letting him know this and am waiting for his response.

So, based on the plug-in that is out there, and the tech team at magic bullet willing to help me fix the flicker, I am guessing that it was a bug in the program all along. Thank you very much for pointing this out overnighttolondon. And thank you khmuse and everyone else for your suggestions and patience with this seemingly stupid little problem that just wont go away.

I will let you know if John gets back to me with a fix.
Rick
