if I have a older bogen tripod, can I use a newer bogen head?

I have a heavy sturdy 3021 Bogen tripod. I would like to get a newer head for my Panasonic 150.
Would a head like a 501hdv fit? I looked at the head i have now, and under the circle part is 3 screws to un-fasten. I am hoping if i buy a new head I can just fasten a new head to it.
What are your thoughts.

I have never tried a new lighter tripod, but my thoughts if i have a tripod near human traffic, I would want my heavy tripod to add better support. What do you think?

I've got a 701 head on 3011 legs- all the threads were the same. Even though Manfrotto keeps changing their nomenclature for everything, a lot of the stuff is basically the same.
