IEEE Host mode -- cannot access target...

Has anyone connected a firewire HDD to the camera and gotten the "cannot access target!" message? I'm using a 2.5" enclosure and a AA battery pack to power it. A 60gb drive is installed. The enclosure has both a 6pin and a 4pin connection. I have tried using both types of cables, and the result is the same:

I plug the drive into the camera, and connect the battery pack. The drive spins up, and powers on. I then turn on the camera, and switch to PC Dub mode. IEEE Host Mode pops up on the screen. About 20 seconds pass, and the light on the enclosure illuminates, showing that the drive is being accessed. The "cannot access target" message appears. About ten seconds pass, and the menu option to format the drive becomes available. Looking at the bottom of the screen, the drive's proper size is displayed. But when I try to format the drive in the menu, it immediately says "cannot format drive" or something similar.

The drive was formatted in Fat32 ahead of time using the PC, which can see the drive just fine via the USB 2.0 port. I have tried multiple drives, and had the same result with all of them. Is it possible my enclosure is a dud? Or is there something I'm missing?

An update: when plugged into the USB port on my PC, I am unable to format the drive. I get a "Windows is unable to format the drive" message. Oddly, If I use the SwissKnife by CompuApps, it seems able to format the drive just fine.

Oh, and I tried using SwissKnife to totally delete the partition on the drive, and let the HVX do everything. No change.

Now I'm really confused. I can use the enclosure via firewire on the PC with no problem. And I can stream DV from the camera to the PC, so the camera's firewire port is fine. What else is there??
