Idiot question - I admit it

I'm a sound guy and in ProTools when you "render a clip" (actually destructively process a region) you get a new clip. I have a big hunk of video that I have broken up into "clips" but they don't want to be self contained??? I'm using a very cool Noise reduction plugin (filter) but I can't get the new cleaned up clips to stick! I have made them master clips but that doesn't seem to do it. I'm getting the feeling that I will have to select each clip one at a time and "export" them but this seems crazy. I guess I could render and the hop into the render folders and copy them out. I need them as separate stand alone clips so I can use Mocha on them.

help is appreciated
Cheers

Your best bet is to export each one as a new clip. Unfortunately, "render" does not create a new clip in the capture folder... it does create a render file with a long, bizarre name. I've never tried to pull a render file out of its folder and use it as a new clip.

It's a little frustrating! STP has this issue but there is a MAKE INDEPENDENT... that will make the clip/ subclip it's own file. The MAKE INDEPENDENT CLIP in FCP doesn't seem to do anything. I'm sure it does but the clip is still just a subclip of the main clip so I don't see any "independence".

The reason I want to do this is because the noise reduction plugin takes a LONG time to render. Once I've cleaned up the clip I don't ever want to go back to the ugly VHS, but there seems to be no way in FCP of making a change permanent. Even disabling and re-enabling a filter trashes the render file, so before and afters are pretty much impossible except on a still frame.

It's been hinted elsewhere that if I had log and captured from the file into FCP they would have all been separate files. That would solve one issue but not the permanent render issue.

Batch export the subclips, then bring them back into FCP. Don't use Make Independent Clip as it's used to break up the master-affiliate clip relationship in FCP and not break up the original media file on your hard drive.

OK the update.
Cools good suggestion, except that you can only batch from the bins/ browser and clips in the browser don't have filters on them. So since I am trying to "bake" (learned a new word) the filter into the clip that has to be output from the time line. Which makes C2V the winner. Though the batch would work for what I originally wanted to do, break up the file into smaller ones, so I have used both methods on this project - adventure. As far as I can tell the export to QuickTime is used a LOT. You wan't/ need to do it before using smoothcam, and probably after. You need to do it to a lot of clips if you want to send you project to color etc. As often as this is used one would think there would be a command key for it!
It's hard to get used to because ProTools just does this whenever it's needed, well most of the time. Any "clip based" filter would render and swap clips automatically in PT. There are cases where you have tt do it manually but not that often and there is a quick key.

If you have a finished sequence, you can drag clips from the timeline back into the Browser (into a bin for example) and it'll create separate clips that have all the filters that you have applied. This will allow you to batch export the clips without having to go through each one at a time.

You can also add filters to clips in the Browser directly by opening the clip in the Viewer and then dragging filters from the Effects tab on to it.

You can add your own keyboard commands and modify every default in FCP. Go to Tools > Keyboard Layout > Customize. Read up on it in your manual.

Cools,
Well I'm not very intimate with FCP but I did put the filter on a bunch of the clips render and put them in a bin. But when I brought them back out to a different sequence the filter was gone? So it's entirely possible that I made some idiot mistake but I did try it and for me it didn't work. But I'll try again and see what happens. I'm assuming it would have to render during the batch export if it did keep the filter. I'll explore since it would be a big time saver.

I understand the RTFM ;~), but I don't find FCP's manuals very helpful, though at over 4 inches there is certainly a lot of pages. I'm usually the one saying RTFM. I think a third party version is probably a better choice. But I'll look at them again also. My memory of them was more travel log less reference book but? And if I remember correctly FCP is the only app with any significant coverage. I remember opening up one, motion maybe? that went over a few things and then basically said to just play with it. I know I had such bad luck trying to find things in them that I just stopped. But I'm coming from a very different orientation so maybe it's me?

Thanks

I think you are trying to make FCP do something it just isn't designed to do. Take methodologies and workflows from other applications and try to apply them to FCP. Well, FCP just isn't like those other applications, so it won't work.

Yes I'm sure that is the case. That's why the thread title calls me an idiot not FCP ;~)

I've been back and forth with PT and FCP and I understand that it's a very different work flow. In the end I was a little surprised that all the recommendations came back to essentially what I would have done in PT but in PT it's a lot easier. And since people seem to be doing this all the time it struck me as strange that FCP doesn't seem to have a streamlined way of doing it. I had assumed that since outputting to QuickTime is a bit of a pain that I was missing the "proper" way to do it.

I'm working on my Roman ways...
