Ideal mic / audio setup for running around with a reporter...

Hi Guys,

Just looking for a bit of advise, i'm bout to start a large-ish project which has a magazine / lifestyle presenter led theme for broadcast.

The presenter will be with me, doing Piece to cameras, interviewing chefs in the kitchen, people at a dining table etc so she will have a handheld mic...

At the moment i have the following kit audio wise..

2 x Sennheiser G3 radio mic packs & 1 x Rode NTG-2 (can use AA batteries) mic. I haven't really needed to use it much for reporting sort of stuff and im worried it might be a bit too directional? What do you think? There will be some voxies of couples at dinner etc so im worried it may be too directional.

At the moment, If i need the NTG-2 wireless (which is what i'm going to need it to be) i just hook one of the G3 transmitters to the rode pistol grip via a small xlr cable and away i go > rode NTG-2 wireless.

The only thing is it's a bit bulky with the pistol grip and the lav transmitter, there is a strong chance the mic may be on camera.

Can anyone recommend a good mic for reporting that would take a mic advertsing box? (f**king hate those things but the client wants it) Anyone had any experience with the rode reporter mic? Also to make it go wireless would you get one of the sennheiser plug on transmitters? I think there are two versions, one with phantom one without.

Basically im looking for a nice plain looking handheld omni mic that is wireless!

Thanks in advance for your help

Paul

The ideal kit would be a Sennheiser MKH8060 short gun and a radio reporter mic.

It seems the "industry standard" would be the Sennheiser MD42 with a SKP100G3 (I see this set-up all the time on the BBC).

So - getting the ew100 ENG G3 would give you a pocket kit with the SKP as well.

If you are going into the camera an Audio Developments AD071 is a great little unit.

My favorite for this kind of thing is the EV RE50N/D-B with a Sennheiser SKP-100. Works a treat, sounds good, no handling noise, doesn't need wind sock in less than a hurricane, and it's an omni so neither the presenter nor the interviewee can make it sound bad. And it will take a mic flag and look good on camera. This is a favorite reporter mic/transmitter in the USA, and it's seen on the nightly news countless times every day.

And in a pinch it can double as a hammer. Or so I'm told. ;-)

I prefer a cardioid mic for hand-held interviews, and use a Sennheiser MD46, either wired to the camera or with an SKP100 transmitter. (With this, the MD42, RE50 or Rode Reporter, phantom power isn't needed because they're all dynamic mics.) A good interviewer who pays attention to pointing the mic can help control background noise a bit using a cardioid.
