Ideal G5 Setup for use with HVX and DVXProHD

With the quad is it necessary to upgrade from the stock video card for FCP work?

FCP will work with the stock card. There are 2 BTO card upgrades however. The NVIDIA 7800 is what I am getting the Quad with, and will be great to have for Motion and After Effects work.

I originally purchased with the QUADRO FX 4500 upgrade, but it's just overkill for what I'm going to do. If I had two 30" Cinema Displays, it would be THE card to have, but I'm hangin out with my single 23" Cinema Display for now.

Also the 7800 will power one 30" and one 23", so I do have an upgrade path. :)

aren't pci-express slots incompatible with pci and pci-x?

pcix is a good way to go.. the decklink cards need pci-x. SATA over PCI-x is a way better format than PCI SATA as it has its own bus. PC guys are fine, as PCI-express has been kicking for ayear.. and you can get PCIx sata cards no problem.. those pci-x cards, if we use the delfacto that Macs are a year behind PC technology, should be out very very soon, so i would wait.

quote off apple website, "PCI Express slots are not compatible with PCI or PCI-X expansion cards." i think g5 quad people who want real sata speed have no choice but to wait a little for pci-express options.

You better double check your facts, as it has always been available for Mac, and they just released v2 which is supposed to use the GPU to render up to 10x faster.

unless this has changed within the last month, I'm pretty sure that Magic Bullet Suite will not run on MAC OS. Just an FYI.

Really!... Well I stand proven wrong, my apologies. Thank you. Last I checked I heard that Magic is not making a version for MAC, but then again it was some time ago.

Thanks again

I was thinking of adding a second internal 500gig HD to my G5 for video editing. Is this O.K? Or do most of you go with external?
Also what does SATA RAID mean?
What are the Lacie drives? They're not SATA RAID?

Mike over at HD for indies posted about a PCI Express card that was compatible with Macs. He wasn't keen on the company's history of Mac support, but it might be the only game in town for a month or so.

one of thses links is not pci express and the other is but does not currently support mac os x. i've heard they are close to releasing the mac drivers.

Dude, Magic Bullet has always been on the Mac. In fact it was released on the Mac a short time before they released a PC version.

PS - No offense intended, I just wanted to prevent any mis-information from floating around.

Hey Silent,
The NVidia 7800GT offers near equal capability to the Quadro in terms of raw performance, but it's only $350 vs. $1650 for the Quadro..

i agree with harlan, save that extra $1000 for a better head&tripod combo or for some nice lens accesories.

i'd also forgo the dual 23" displays and get only one 23" using it with the HDLink for viewing your work. i'd recommend getting two 20" LCDs for your main displays.

also echoing thoughts on not buying max ram from Mac directly, but make sure you buy from whoever the most reputable Mac memory dealers there are.

Thanks for all the help guys, this info is helping a lot. FYI got an email from Mike at Blackmagic saying there will be new cards coming from them very, very soon that support the PCI-E of the new G5s. He said they already are shipping PCI-E cards designed for PCs but that I should wait because new cards are coming.

Also I heard back from TransIntl who makes the miniG drives which are fairly affordable Raid 0 Setups, that they should have PCI-E cards available to ship within the next week or so.

You should definitely get the Dell 24" rather than the Apple 23". Same quality, cheaper, marginally larger, and has component inputs. The only thing you're giving up is the Firewire hub on the display itself. No-brainer, really.

Just to be clear what does the Blackmagic DeckLink HD Pro 4:2:2 Card offer to his set-up? Not clear its purpose.

Don't get a Dell  You'll be sacrificing a lot in resolution seeing it only seems to offer 1920 x 1200, you'll also might be loosing colors. Compare amount of colors both monitors output because remember, it's LCD and you need colors to be represented as truly as possible.

The Dell's are definitely not the same quality. Some panels are dead on matches for the quality, some exceed the quality, but the others are flawed in various areas. Due to Dell's poor quality control requirements the quality of your panel is really the luck of the draw.

It does have some nice features and a great price-point, but don't claim it's the same quality when the quality is so varied on the Dell panels that such an open statement is somewhat misleading.

They're great panels when you get a good one, don't get me wrong.

Blackmagic DeckLink HD Pro 4:2:2 Card
Blackmagic HDLink

If your shooting HVX...delay on this purchase...for 2 reasons...
why capture uncompressed ..you'll need a deck and FAST RAID. Just transfer from hard drive or P2.

Did I mention you need a DVCPRO HD deck to use the DeckLink?

you can get a HD-component to HD--SDI adapter to take your blacklink from camera... no need for a deck.

would it be so bad to run a HD monitor through the camera (computer>firewire >HVX200> D4 component out)? ...that is assuming the HVX can do this.

Why not a HVX workflow solution - DVCPRO HD, Cineform codec or even Uncompressed HD - on a PC* basis?

* less expensive
