HDCAM is 3:1:1.
It really all depends how you read/reduce numbers.
3:1:1 sounds like less than 4:2:2, but it's not.

The Sony has more luma information and the same chroma information as Panasonic
when in 1080i/p. That could be perceived as an "advantage"

DVCPRO-HD (720p & 1080i)
4:2:2 (15:7:7) 74.25, 37.125, 37.125

HDCAM (1080p & 1080i)
3:1:1 (17:6:6) 148.5, 37.125, 37.125

I guess if you have the money for a bunch of DVX's it's a good way to go. I would just make sure that you hed everything else you need first. You can buy a half dozen or so single chip cameras for the prce of a DVX.

That being said, if I were first year film student, I would be more enthusiastic about the results of projects shot on a DVX. If I were looking at a school, the gear might be a tiebreaker for me as well.

Sort of off topic but how much of a price difference to Japanese citizens pay (in Japan) for Sony/Panasonic camcorders than what Americans pay here in the U.S.?
