Idea: swap stock footage

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

Sounds good. But we do run into different technology barriers, such as DVD media. +R -R, and what readers will read them. IT would suck to send off a DVD that the other person could read, but recieve one that your reader woulldn't read. That may have to be part of the membership profile, what type of DVD they prefer, or CDR if the clip is small enough. I have a plextor +/-R, so i'm set to burn for peeps. Another concern w/ DVD is the brand of DVD used, as some make crappy burns...

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

I'm just suggesting a cheaper way to start something like this up. It places the burden of cost on the users rather then on a central service.

Unless you can get some free bandwidth and storage, this could prove to be a massive headache when people start downloading and uploading clips...the host has to pay in both directions.

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

As far as Overland Films involvement in the DVX communal trade society - I could see it working like this...

Member User 1 emails one or twelve short clips of local footage - corn fields, Boston Commons, the Space Needle or Yosemite valley in winter. OF posts these clips at a preview resolution with watermark and supporting information just like the samples already online.

Member User 2, who also has several clips posted, likes a particular scene lensed by MU1, and emails or PMs them directly to request its use and pay costs for burn / dupe and mailing of same. This would be strictly between users - I wouldn't want to become involved in these friendly transactions for obvious liability reasons.

In my mind, a non-contributing Producer who visits the site might well see a clip he might make use of in an independent project. In this instance, Overland Films would broker the transaction as indicated above. The communal and commercial processes would be separate and distinct - never the two trains would meet.

I don't know - is this too simple to work?

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

I think that's exactly how we should do it. If we can thinktank a way to ensure both ends trade effectively... like to ensure quality control of the board. Maybe a ratings system of the user?

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

Sexy idea greeches. I can set up an area on my bulletin board over there for contributing members only - where we allow direct M2M conversations.

Anyone else (potential buying customers) would go through conventional contract / terms of use.

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

Okay, yes...that makes sense to me now, especially if you're talking about the physical transfer of the footage being handled off-"site".

What are the qualifications for being a "member"? Whats to stop a prospective client from becoming a "member" and then freely leaching stuff they would otherwise pay for?

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

JBarnes,

As stated (never very clearly!) above, the free transactions between DP members would be just that - between members.

Because we're just acting as a clearing-house for previews of great stock images from member DPs - and not housing the broadcast resolution product - we would have no say whatever in how barters, trades or donations proceed.

Now, if OF is approached for a sale by a non-contributing client, then we would broker the deal based on the rates you set forth when you submit.  Is that as clear as mud?  The fact that we don't presently have your broadcast master - or facsimile thereof - prohibits us from striking a deal in your absence.

The private area on our bbs is already set up - strictly for DP members.

To become a member, send along any clips (5 - 15 second runtime), pertinent scene / location / subject / camera type / acq. format and a .JPEG frame grab for each clip and we'll post it. In the beginning, we should limit submissions to standard stock fare - panoramic establishing shots, wildlife, timelapses, cityscapes et-cetera. Naturally, the more diverse the images we represent, the more we become a viable resource for inserts to producers needing to fill content gaps.

I'm developing an interview form to accompany submissions where you can choose rate ($ value) per second for market / intended use.  Should be a very quick document to fill-out!

We will drop your Overland Films Member DP username in the scene description under each clip if you're interested in having other Overland Films DP members approach you for barter situations.

I'm excited about testing this concept - hope we'll see lots of footage listed that otherwise might just "sit on the shelf"!

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

To be able to use your DP forums do you want us to send you the stock footage that we want to put up (along with description/jpeg etc)?

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

Well, I think it makes sense to keep the forum set aside for offline discussions for the shooters who offer clips through OF. I can set up a public-side area too, though I'm trying to figure out what purpose it would serve...

One thing we might want to avoid is direct contact between producers and the represented DPs. Having spent plenty of time in organized labor, I know how end-client to labor negotiations diminishes the power on the labor side. This is always the case. We effectively will put one price up there - based on what you want - and that will be the non-negotiable price to the end-client. Otherwise, it becomes a flea market where the producer always wins and the DP feels compromised.

I don't want to divert discussion from this forum unless your footage is represented. Even then - I know where I'll spend much of my day!

This is just about the best thing since... well, the DVX!

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

Well, whatever you guys come up with, I'm in. I have tons of footages that I'm willing to contribute. I can care less about getting paid or anything in that nature. Money always causes problems..

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

The gritty details for the business-side will be laid out on my site.

We have some threads up now - detailing price tiers you can choose when officially submitting footage; business practices where we'll address the legalities of the brokerage (licensing, tax reporting); percentages and fees that Overland Films will collect on a transactional basis...

Now, the free-trade stuff should be a great resource and associative benefit for our community!  Like the commercial options, we'll place your clips for free - with the trade / barter stuff remaining exclusively between the requesting party and the media copyright holder.
