Idea: swap stock footage

greeches

Veteran
We can request footage from different states and swap with one another. We are spread all over.

(EX: Bluespider wanted some footage of the blue ridge parkway, i'd trade him for some local attraction he has in his area)

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

raw DVNTSC can be a huge issue for storage space...good luck on finding volunteers. and P.K. Gillock on dialup from Thailand will be SSSSOOOOO jealous... ;D

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

greeches, I like your idea but I honestly would rather have either HD or 35mm stock images. What are you looking for greeches? I have tons of footages thats just collecting digital dust.

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

NIce job putting that togther Overland; anyone in need of the SAN DIEGO area let me know :)

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

If anyone wants to participate in this on an experimental basis, I'd be glad to beta the concept. I think we could warehouse short clips like the larger stock houses do - in a completely ethereal environment.

I'm not even beginning to dent my storage space, and would love to have clips of skylines from major and minor points of interest throughout the US and beyond.

Most stock houses represent a handful of DPs who, like us, grab a few throwaway shots when acquiring for larger projects.

Often, a value is assigned based on format; subject; intended market and purpose (e.g., domestic, world, broad markets like Internet, student, commercial, non-commercial) and charged per second purchased. Naturally, our DPs could waive fees completely if they wanted to donate an establishing shot to our DVX contemporaries!

Anyway - I think it would be cool to keep it in the family! If it were ever to get up and running, I'd explore archiving it and staffing a suite that could dupe out in multiple formats to the end-client on behalf of our DPs. The DPs would get the money, OverlandFilms would pocket a small percentage plus the client-shouldered dupe fees.

As far as I'm concerned - I'm not too attached to a lot of the junk I shoot. If one production across the world can make use of my "throwaway" images in exchange for a bit of money...

I'm open to suggestions, criticisms and concerns of any kind!

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

well, i'm more than glad to shoot some L.A. skylines for anyone that wants it.

i know you can't use any images of the Hollywood sign without permission, however.

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

I've acquired permits in LA before - how do they have the Hollywood sign locked-down exactly?  Does anyone know how the Las Vegas restrictions work?

Can you take images of the casinos from public spaces - like sidewalks?  I've been curious about that situation for a while!

If anyone wants to forward files to my attention, I'd be glad to post them accordingly.  Try to limit the shot to the best portion of the take - perhaps with a 15 second limit?  Please include the following info in the email:

SUBJECT TITLE (e.g., EXT - CHICAGO SKYLINE - OVERCAST DAY)

BRIEF SHOT DESCRIPTION - Static shot of city during rushhour.

SUBJECT LOCATION (BLAKE, IOWA more important for a cornfield in Iowa than a skyscraper in Chicago!);

FORMAT (e.g., 3-chip DV, 720p (HD), 480p (525 NTSC)

ACQUISITION FRAME RATE  (e.g., 24p / 30p)

TOTAL AVAILABLE CLIP TIME - you might submit the best 10 seconds, but let me know if there is another five minutes of the same shot

DP INFORMATION - Name and resident city; credentials if any

How does all this sound?

sounds sweet. I can grab alot of old barnes and field shots for people, if they need it.

my day job is spent in the print world in motion picture advertising and i've always heard that you can't use it without permission, but i just confirmed it with a quick google to the hollywood chamber of commerce. which states in their FAQ:

I’d like to use the Hollywood Sign and the Hollywood Walk of Fame.  Do I need to get permission to do this?

Yes.  Please contact Global Icons at (310) 820-5300.

i bet Barry Green knows the answer to that one. He's in Las Vegas, right?

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

Here is how the big boys do it...

Price to End User
Each clip would be priced by the cinematographer. Again, prices would be based on a mix of format and how rare any given footage might be.

As most other stock houses do, clips would be sold per second, with 10 second minimums. Intended use and where the derived program would play would determine the scalable price.

MARKETS:
DOMESTIC, INTERNATIONAL, BROAD (WORLDWIDE)

INTENDED USE:
NON-BROADCAST, BROADCAST, ADVERTISING

The two sorting criteria are used in conjunction, per second, to determine the final price. Domestic Non-Broadcast would be least expensive, while Broad Advertising (e.g., worldwide Coke campaign) would be most costly per second.

Normally, houses charge $10 / second to start and go up into the $100s / second for the most expensive combined criterias.

Licensing - How Your Footage Could be Used

The license agreement is what is commonly called 'Rights-Managed' between the DP and the end-user. The purchase entitles the end-user one single use in a derivative work - a single insert in a single production. Usually, there are limits in place to keep the entire derivative program from being made up of brokered footage.

Non-Broadcast:
The Non-Broadcast License allows for use on ONE of the following Non-Broadcast Media: internet, home video, corporate video, exhibit, CD/DVD, or other Media excluding “Broadcast” or “Advertising/Theatrical" use, as defined below. License terms for National and Worldwide options are 5 years. The Broad Media option permits use in a single production on any number of Non-Broadcast Media, in perpetuity.

Broadcast:
Broadcast use includes displaying, performing or playing the Media Asset Footage on all forms of television, including television film use, but not advertising use. License terms for National and Worldwide options are 5 years. The Broad Media option permits use in a single production for Broadcast use or any Non-Broadcast Media, in perpetuity.

Advertising/Theatrical:
Advertising/Theatrical use includes television commercials on all forms of television or theatrical use for exhibition in movie theaters where admission is charged. License terms for National and Worldwide options are 1 year. The Broad Media option permits use in a single production for ANY USE on ANY MEDIA, in perpetuity.

Territorial Option:
The Territorial options permit either national use (exhibition limited to one country) or worldwide, permitting use throughout the world. The Broad Media option allows for use worldwide.

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

I think I sometimes tend to think in more communal directions, but one way I think this idea could work is if payment were simply on a trade credit system.

Everyone starts out with an arbitrary number of credits...say five. If you want a shot of the golden gate bridge and I live in SF...I go out and shoot it and mail you a copy of the tape.

You pay me one credit. You have four and I have six. Now, I want a shot of the washington monument and someone else can shoot it and mail it to me. I pay him a credit.

It ensures a give and take environment and distributes the cost of operation among the people participating. Sure you have to pay for a tape and postage to send it to someone, but then you get a credit towards a free-of-charge stock shot.

I think it could work, but it's just an idea.

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

I like that! My concept of a pay system would be set up for people outside the Overland Films "Circle of DVX".

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

I'm thinking communal too. LIke Bit torrent, you have to allow upload to download. Maybe its a put one in, take one out deal? 15 sec clip max for now, so that it is possible to download. Maybe we can get a java geek to make a small p2p software just for this community.

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

anything that's based on bandwidth has inherrent flaws. For any stock footage to be useful, you need far more then a 15 second clip...and ideally you want to have many variations of a subject or theme.

If I want the Empire state building at night, it does me no good if your 15 second clip only has the shot during the day.

The strength of any stock footage would be in the variations provided to the end user. Different angles, different weather conditions, different distances, different lighting conditions, different times of day, different seasons even.

I just know that once you start accounting for bandwidth, you're starting to rely heavily on technology and much less on community.

That is, unless your idea were to evolve into a multi-hosted bit-torrent server setup. But that's even more complicated.

Re: Idea: swap stock footage

Well, I'm talking about a community-based beta project to get the ball rolling. Free-trade exchanges for friends and pay service to anyone outside the membership.

I'm not certain what you mean when you talk about the Empire State building? Why wouldn't we host fifteen different clips of the building from different angles and times of day?

One of my best friends is the head technology and content guy at ofoto, so I'm not worried about finding or developing a technology when basic OTS technology won't do anymore.

That sounds like one of those "good problems" to have!
