Ibook

Besides the obvious top of the line specs on an Ibook, what would be a good size cpu and ram on a mac? I know it differs from a PC so I'm curious because I want to buy one but don't want to make a mistake and get something not powerful enough.

Going to run Final Cut and do a lot of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator.

You sound like what might be described as a power user in that you utilize processor-intensive and RAM-hungry applications. Therefore, I would suggest something from this menu.

Sorry... you did say 'besides the obvious top of the line' and I linked you to it anyway. :embarasse

It really comes down to what you want to do with it (type of work) and your budget. If you have your eye on a 1.2GHz w/256 RAM, then go ahead and buy one. However, I do believe you'll need much more RAM - (assuming you were talking about RAM).

Yeah, I agree with the ram. I'm looking at one that can go to 640mb. So a 1.2ghz will run Adobe Apps fine? I have a Dell 2.8ghz HT and it runs perfect with only 512mb ram. Just don't know the comparison chart between an Intel CPU and Mac CPU.

FWIW, I cut a 2 hour 13 minute documentary on my iBook, and put out 6 different Double Layer DVDs with subtitles in different languages.

My specs: 12" iBook 1.33Ghz (last revision) 1.5GB RAM 40GB HDD.

In addition I used:

1) 300GB external HDD Seagate IDE 7200RPM 16MB cache, with FireWire 400.

2) 21" DELL FP2100 monitor and used the "spanning" trick to have non-mirrored screen real estate with my 12" iBook screen.

3) External DVD burner Pioneer - Double Layer burning

4) External Speakers - M-Audio Bx8a Amplified Studio Reference Monitors

I was using FCP 4.5 HD and DVDSP 4.1. The iBook worked like a champ. I had zero problems, it was superfast. I used some special effects, but did not use Motion.

If you want to use the iBook, I'd say the 1.2Ghz is fine - the key is to max out your RAM.

OH my GOD! iahd no idea macs were that expensive.... (my Jaw is on the floor).......

Wow. They better be pretty fast.....

you could buy used power pc chip model if you want to save some. as previously stated, additional ram is going to be more important than having the latest and greatest processor.

Buy the refurbs. I'm on a top of the line Black Macbook. Got it refurbed plus $101 off. So it cost me about $1070 (shipping was free but tax wasn't). A far cry from the $1400 price. I immediately maxxed everything out and bought a $300gb drive. (I have two 300gb now and an 80gb).
