Ibc 2018

I'm not sure you can rename a thread without a moderator.

Let me try to tie up this discussion with a bow. After this post I will stop talking about global shutter, or continue in another thread. I first meant it to be only the one-sentence IBC wish list at post #3. The problem is when someone argues with you, well naturally you feel you should answer their objections. But then they feel they must reply, and so on.

The other problem is the nature of written text and the page layout of this PHP BB forums such as this. If we were sitting in a circle of chairs at a cafe, and someone said, "Hey, what do you guys expect to see at IBC?" And I said, "I don't know, but I wish one day we'd see global shutter," no one would knock me on the back of the head for "hijacking the conversation." In fact, even we all began discuss that issue for five minutes, the original person would probably be okay. The problem is a five-minute conversation in real life, if transcribed, would take up about two pages or so. If you were there in person, you could probably drift off and miss most of it. But online you are suddenly hit with a wall of text that looks like the whole thread is ruined. I'm sorry this happened, and I wish there was a better page layout. For example on Hacker News, replies in a thread branch off, and you can click a little minus sign to collapse them.

The End. (Sorry)

My hopes:

1) that Sound Devices are done with the MixPre series and will now announce a new 6xx series recorder

2) Rode is shipping the NT-SF1 and it will hopefully perform close to as good as say a SPS200

3) Atomos will give us the SDI expansion for the Ninja V

4) Deity will show off new wireless?

5) Panasonic announces an EVA1 MFT version.

I'm curious about an A7Siii,
although I don't want to be tempted to trade up from my A7Sii.
May be an interesting event this year.

...and I too am a big fan of global shutter :)

Hello,
Don't be sorry, it's ok, thread hijacking is normal on forums !

Global Shutter discussion deserves it's own thread, could a nice moderator out there split the related messages on a new thread please ? Thank you.

I'm pretty sure NT-SF1 will show up this year in Amsterdam !

I'm thinking about getting their mixpre10t in the future, what is it in the 6xx "recorders" that are so much better or in need of improvements? To me the 6xx seems so similar to mixpre10t (they are both more recorders than mixers) and the preamps seems good already on the mixpre10t (i.e. I will not dish out twice the money for a small increase in preamps)... seems logical for them to improve on 6xx with apps and whatnot since the 6xx should be around 6-8 years old. However, even so I'm getting a feeling the mixpre10t is canibalizing their top tier recorders (but they had to put something out in response to Zoom F8),

As far as IBC or in the near future after the event, I would love to see an a6700 with 4K/60p.

The a7SIII will be the priority (whenever it's released) and without a doubt Sony's first 4K/60p mirrorless (with other bells and whistles) - IMO - but it would be nice to see the smaller and cheaper S35 option 2-3 months later.

Hate to veer off this a little, but can someone tell me the differences in the mixpre10t and the 6 series? I get the streaming capabilities and what not, but outside of that, what's the difference?

AES ips and ops, XLR ops, AUX ops, Dugan AutoMix, Sd MixAssist. I think it's been said already: 1 is a recorder the other a mixer recorder. I could probably do half my work on MP10, but the other half i still need something like 633.

Also..dual record media, one switchable from mirroring torecording mp3 for transcription.

Thank you! For me I guess the only thing I might use is AES i/o, but the rest seems more useful for live-mixing/recording, and for me all I need is clean audio for editing later on...

Yeah, you can kind of look at the MixPre series as similar to the 7XX series, they're recorders, and the 664, 688 and 633 as Mixers that Record. If you do a lot of ENG and live stuff, the 664 & 633 series are awesome(664 is more versatile than the 688, IMO). Their versatility with IN's, OUT's and routing, especially the 664 are incredible. We did a live show a couple of years ago and fed four cameras, the satellite truck and the "house feed"(which we were able to keep separate control of in-case we needed to kill), plus the ISO record/back-up of all of the channels all out of just this one mixer(664).

The AutoMix and MixAssist features are only on the 688 and 633. I spoke to SD and because of the 'more analog nature' of the 664, the AM/MA can't be added to it. But honestly, I've never used it yet on my 633. Although I need to test it out to see how good it actually is. I have been told that the Dugan AM is actually used a lot on a lot of (live) shows that have lot's of people mic'd at once. I also have yet to use AES audio, either. One of my audio guys has rented my 664 before and used the AES out to feed four independent channels to an F5(the F5/55 is switchable to accept Analog and AES audio IN).

You get a lot of bang for your buck with the MIxPre series, but if you do ENG and live stuff, the 633 and 664 are better suited for that world, since that's what they were designed for.

I've owned the 664, 633, and I have mixpre 3 and 688.

My main question is why you think the 664 is more versatile? There are a few things at the preamp stage that the 664 could do that the 688 I couldn't, but I definitely felt like the 688 was an upgrade.

I use the Dugan automix whenever I am using multiple lavs or booms. It makes for a great useable mix. The SL6 has also made my life so much easier. I have no interest in having the 10t since I often need to feed multiple cameras, hops, IFB. I'm also interested to see what they announce with Audio, LTD.

Personally, I am interested if Sound Devices has completely EOL'd their Video Devices brand or if they are presenting anything new.

The direct out channel option has come in handy(came in handy a few times on the 442, too). With the 688 all the "inputs" are inputs only. The 664 gives you the option to run 6-12 as inputs or direct outs(although originally when it first shipped, the 664 direct outs were only outs unless you had the CL-6). Definitely not an everyday necessity, but nice when you need it. There are some things about the 688 that I really like that I wish the 664 had, like the power system, so there's no(or much more minimized) chance of losing files in the event of a power loss. Also, the AM/SD and the "vertical" meter screen is cool, too. I did sit-down and compare them when the 688 came out, debating whether to upgrade and decided I liked the 664 better for what we do. It's great that we have lots of good choices and SD gives us lots of great gear. And if I didn't own the 664, I may have gone for the 688. Just didn't think it offered me enough vs. what I have.

Personally, the two reasons that really swayed me to a 633 are redundant media (failsafe) and automix (for IFB mixes and for live feeds in a multiple person interview or panel discussion etc.

I should actually amend my comments. I started looking at the 688 a little more after my post and with all of the independent assignable AUX outs, it is a pretty flexible mixer in regards to routing and outputs, as well.

And circling back around to several posts ago where, I believe, IronFilm said he'd like to see some updated 6XX series mixers. This is something I've been thinking about for a few years and it kind of moves us a little more away from mixing, at least in the field, but we've been traveling down that road for years now, with ISO recording and sorting it out in post. BUT, I'd like to see each L/R Camera Output Bus to have independent routing. Using my 664 as an example: it has THREE camera output buses, two 10-pins and a pair of XLR's(plus a pair of mini-XLR's, but no return so it's not a "camera output") that are the L/R mix. All of the camera output buses are the same Master L/R mix. So what ever channels are assigned to the LEFT channel go to the LEFT on all of those output buses and the same for the right. I'd like to be able to create a different mix(if I wanted to) to EACH CAMERA BUS. So if I wanted to, I could create a mix going to camera output A, a different mix to output B and a different to output C. I know I can create a separate mix to the AUX's, but that's not as practical as the camera output buses with return.

I know you're probably saying, but you have ISO recording in the mixer. But we all know there are times and situations when the in-camera audio tracks are all thats used, especially in TV. In a simple example, say you have a two-person, two camera interview and the specs call for each person to be lav'd and boomed. So the camera that is on the subject can receive the subjects separate boom and lav on individual channels on output A and the correspondent camera can do the same with the correspondents audio on output B.

FWIW, 633 has aux outs that you can route differently to.
In terms of camera returns, there are passive inexpensive compact mini phone plug stereo switchers to feed your return bus.

Aren’t Canon and Nikon both releasing their new mirrorless cameras just before IBC? Although not broadcast, they should be on display...

My big hope is that Sony will counter them with the A7SIII with support for ProRes RAW via hdmi to the Ninja V ;)
