All Panasonic mini-DV tapes use the dry lubrication formula.

Not because of lube, because of the quality of the tape itself. The MQs are held to closer specs than the PQs. The EJs are less speccy than the PQs.

MQ tapes have higher density particles. They not only have longer shelf life but record the tracks more accurately and hold up better if you search back and forth. The biggest problem that there has been with Mini-DV tape is edge damage. The tape is light-weight, not as near as robust as DVCPro tape. The MQ (and now AMQ) gets you as close to broadcast quality tape as you are able to get in the Mini-DV format.

One of the biggest problems we have seen with the cheaper tapes is dirt. When the edge of the tape wears away, the worn particles have to go somewhere. They end up either clogging heads or compacted in a track on the lower head called the "rabbit", or both. The results of head clogs are obvious however, the results you get from a dirty "rabbit" are quite odd. You end up with interchangeability issues. Recordings will look great being played back on the camera it was recorded on, but when you play it back on the deck you capture with, you're getting intermittent break-up or even just unusable video.
Regular cleanings are recommended to keep this from happening, but higher quality tape will help prevent it from happening as often.
