The Under Water, Over Land Challenge (UWOL) is the planet's premiere nature and outdoors video production contest. A unique opportunity for documentarians, planet Earth-lovers, extreme sports enthusiasts, bird-watchers, sea-dwellers, and all aspiring outdoor film makers to join a community of like minded people, swap stories, learn skills, win prizes and maybe get an exclusive place in the winners circle."

I joined UWOL 21 and basically you sign up, and then they send everyone a theme, and you have 4 weeks to find a story, shoot it, edit it, and submit it. The final video has to be between 2 to 3 minutes (excluding credits). The theme for this round was "Birds, Fish, Reptiles and Amphibians" - sounds easy enough but it was tough to find 4 stories and fit them in just 3 minutes running time.

I focused on unpopular animals, from the perspective of 4 different people who have to deal with them on a day-to-day basis. Editing this film was difficult as I just had 45 seconds to set up and show each of the 4 stories: so I focused on quick cuts (including a lot of jump cuts to drive the story forward) and forgot about trying to do any special effects.

After judging my video 'unloved' was voted the winner of UWOL 21:
