I will never buy another Cinevate product… and you shouldn't either, in my opinion

I'm posting this as a warning to fellow DVXusers, and I feel it's important that others are aware of this. My ordeal with Cinevate goes back to a year ago, and I will detail it for all so you understand how terrible Cinevate's customer service is, how their products aren't that great, and how they are flat out dishonest and deceptive with pricing.

Last year I ordered my AF100 and a GH2 and needed new support gear for them. I liked the look of Cinevate's gear, and already owned the Durus follow focus, so it made sense. At that time Cinevate was running their annual 12 Days of Festivus sale. 2 of the products I wanted was the DSLR Rig with Uno Grips. Upon inspection of the pricing I noticed that the individual items that make up that kit totaled less than the sale price. When I questioned Cinevate's sales team about this I received a lot of runaround and a refusal to explain why it was like that or to correct the pricing. This forced me to contact Dennis Wood (owner of the company) directly, to which he told me there was something wrong and gave me a 10% discount off my entire order. I was thankful for that and it actually ended up saving me even more money as I was also ordering other additional products from them including the Titan Matte Box. However, as their sale continued and I also continued to have issues with what I ordered I noticed that the pricing problems were never fixed during their sale, so it essentially was not a sale and really was Cinevate deceiving their customers on that kit as well as other products they had in their "sale".

When I finally received my order I immediately found compatibility issues with their Proteus rails system and matte box. The rods were thicker than other rods I had from Indisystem, Redrock, and Zacuto, and would not fit in most of my other accessories from those companies or from Varizoom. The other rods I had from those companies did slide into the rods slots on the Proteus plate and the Titan matte box, but I could not tighten them enough with the small thumbscrews they provided without great effort or risk that they'd slide out eventually. Upon contacting Cinevate and Dennis Wood about this they refused to acknowledge any compatibility problems and said it was within their tolerances, clearly not taking into account the shiny coating they put on their rods is probably what made them too thick. It was an ordeal to get the issue resolved, but eventually they took the Proteus mount and rods back from my after I told them I'd keep the shoulder pad, grips, counterweight, and matte box if they provided the larger thumbscrews so I could actually tighten them down on the other rods. Initially they didn't refund the proper amount and I had to request and even explain the correct amount to be refunded to me. I also had to pay for the return shipping from US to Canada, even though it was clearly a manufacturing issue with their products and working with other industry standard and widely used equipment.

Cinevate also wanted to refund my return as an in-store credit only, even though their return policy stated nothing about no refunds or in-store credits. I had to show them their own return policy before they would agree to give me a refund.

Around the same time I also started finding the necessity to actually use a whip and crank on my Durus follow focus for the first time and found the accessory port was too small. Upon contacting Cinevate I discovered my Durus had been in a batch that had a manufacturing flaw. I had to ship the follow focus back to them and wait for it to be replaced. Issues with this are that Cinevate should know which customers buy their products from them directly and should have contacted me when they found out about the flaw. Second, if it's a manufacturer flaw, the customer shouldn't have to pay the shipping. Third, Cinevate would not cross ship the replacement to me. I had to wait until they received the defective one before they would ship the good one to me, even after I provided proof of shipment. It comes down to good and proper customer service, which they clearly don't possess.

With that ordeal finally dealt with and in the past I continued to use the gear over the past year with relatively no issues… until very recently I've had issues with the Titan matte box. First is the top flag, which I never needed to use until a very recent shoot, won't stay up, no matter how much you tighten it. Move it a couple times and it just falls down. The finish on the front of the matte box is also becoming discolored in a purplish tint. I contacted Cinevate about this on November 6th (a Sunday) and didn't get a response until Thursday the 10th. Cinevate admitted to the issue and said they were still working on a fix. Really? It's been a year already since I had it and the product has been out longer than that, and other manufacturers don't have this issue, and you can't fix it? They offered to send my an alternate screw that might work better. It's not December 21st and I've yet to receive the screw. I've contacted Cinevate multiple times about this and get slow responses or saying "Hi Mike; I will talk to the shipping department about the screw. If it went regular post it does take a longer time to get to you, but I imagine it would have been there by now. I will contact you again shortly." and then nothing else. Very bad customer service. Just terrible. And they are denying any issue with discoloration of the front of the matte box.

Below is the correspondence I've had with Cinevate that demonstrates their poor customer service and should serve as a good warning to others.

I have removed the emails since I did not have permission to post them.

That is the last correspondence with Cinevate. I think this demonstrated how terrible of a company Cinvate is and why I will never buy another Cinevate product and why I think others shouldn't either.

WOW, Yeah, I can't say I blame you. It's good to know how companies treat customers with issues. After reading this, I defenitly wouldn't order from them either, as there's lots of companies competing now with rigs. Customer service has to be top notch. Prices have to be good. That part where they charge more to put it together is laughable. I suggest you look at edelkrone, They were awarded a black diamond at Nab this year for their rigs. I have been a long time customer, even back when they were handy35. They had the best customer service I have ever had to deal with. Not to mention, their rigs are just sick, (in a good way, LOL) Heck even the indian companies have decent customer service. I had a rail set that had issues, they sent another one without wanting the original back. Which I was suprised.

Lame. Though the pricing situation, unfortunately, is not unique in the retail world. I cannot tell you how often I see a "sale" or "Black Friday" or whatever price and it's just as high or higher than regular - basically it's aimed at people who don't follow the product pricing for months and so don't know that the "30% discount!!!" is really off of MSRP and you can get a better deal on Amazon or wherever, often from the very same company. I often see the "50% discount" or whatever, but since I follow product prices for months before I pull the trigger, I notice that they first RAISE the price by 60%, and only then lower by 50% for a net more expensive by 10%. It's basically a free for all. When you see "bundle price" or "discount" or "sale" or whatever, always assume it's a bunch of BS. Either the price works for you, or it doesn't, but you can't trust most places to be truthful and diligent about the actual discounts.

Of course, the horrendous customer service in this case is a separate issue. But whatever - there are plenty of companies in this space, and there is no reason to buy from jerks - just take your business elsewhere and warn your friends. You did the right thing.

As much as I understand you, would this posting and a reconciliation from cinevate that you find appropriate, make you change your mind or even modify this posting?
What if cinevate asks you to remove it because in their eyes you damage their company?
I dont know anything about civil law in the US but here in Germany you would be in a bucket load of trouble for this posting.
I do appreciate the warning though :-)

Freedom of speech. Consider it a review of their company and it's practices, including evidence. Cinevate can attempt reconciliation by taking their products back and giving me a full refund on what I still actually own. I don't want their products anymore at all. Every time I look at their products I get a bad taste in my mouth and I also don't want to use their equipment and give them the satisfaction of others seeing their gear being used. So Cinevate can give me my money back and apologize and then I'd consider modifying the post in some way or even asking the mods to remove it. Until then I don't think there's anything Cinevate can do to refute any of this and make an argument for the post needing to be removed. I didn't post this expecting anything from Cinevate. I posted it as a warning to others.

Additionally...

When I first started having the issue with the rods thickness I contacted Varizoom, who makes the Riglits shock absorber system I received at the same time. I explained to them what was going on and how I thought the holes the rods slide into might be too small. It was an amazing response from Varizoom. They immediately contacted their design team and said they'd do whatever needed to be done to fix the problem. I quickly learned that it wasn't Varizoom's issue, but Cinevate's manufacturing of the rods being too thick as all the other rods I've tried with that Varizoom part work perfectly. I let Varizoom know this and thanked them for their quick (less than 24 hours around the holidays) and friendly response. They again quickly replied back how happy they were that I was able to get their product working and that there were no issues, along with an invite and free tickets to NAB. I know it's not difficult to get free passes to NAB, but it was a kind gesture nonetheless and an example of what great customer service is like.... something Cinevate doesn't demonstrate. Every time I've called or emailed Varizoom they were always extremely helpful and nice. Varizoom has won a customer for life, Cinevate has lost one.

You lucky SOB´s :-) you have freedom of speech over there, I guess we are losing it over here....seriously!

Glad Varizoom worked out like this for you, and thanks for the info.

Sorry to hear about your Cinevate problems. I guess I have been pretty lucky. Ive had nothing but a positive experience with them.

Well, slander and libel are illeagal, meaning you can't just say something false publically to hurt someone's name or company (no defamation of character), but this is obviously substantiated, so sharing your experience, good or bad, I don't believe is illeagal if you're telling the truth in the US. Our first ammendment rights protect us :)

I always had great respect for Cinevate and when I've needed some service its been super quick. Sorry to hear about your troubles.

Wow. Amazing post. Thank you. I especially appreciate the detail and documentation. I'm sure you have saved me potential grief.

Denis the owner is on DVXUser all the time and I would think he'll have some response, but perhaps just with Mike.

If that is so, I can't imagine he wouldn't want to air a public apology, explanation or defense to the OP. I can't tell you how often I have used the recommendations of DVXuser threads to consider a purchase. I always filter anything I read on the internet carefully, but considering the public email disclosure on this one, it would seem that Cinevate clearly dropped the ball. Now that this is public, it is hard to put the Genie back in the bottle and deserves some damage control. There are plenty of matte boxes and rail systems on the market, good design, fair pricing, and customer service will differentiate a manufacturer from the rest of the pack.

I use reviews from this forum constantly, and will certainly remember this one. Sometimes, things just come in clumps and bad things pile up all at once. Even so, this kind of customer service is unacceptable. I had a similar thing happen about a decade ago with Sony -- anyone remember the ill-fated DSR 200? Yikes.... I know how frustrating it is to have a manufacturer turn their back on a problem - it makes a real impression and I have not bought a thing from Sony since, nor have I missed them. This story brings up a lot of memories for me, and I will be watching to see how (if) C-Vate responds....

Mike,

I feel for you.

Dennis seems a nice guy, but I'm not a fan of most of his designs, & hated dealing with his company, so moved onto more professional options.

Best,
Bern
